Main Campus - Year 4
This week, Year 4 was a buzz of excitement with the news that ‘regular schooling’ was commencing next week. On top of that, CU2 welcomed CU1 back to Carlsruhe and CU3 settled back into life on the Main Campus.
Hats
As we are in Term 4, all students are required to wear a hat while outdoors. Could all students please remember to bring their hat to school, to avoid having to play in a shaded area during recess and lunch.
Extension Maths Activity
During Remote Learning, a small group of Year 4 students took part in an applied maths task. The task was designed to strengthen their mathematical thinking and problem solving skills. The students were to build a farm, taking into account certain parameters including how much area an individual animal would need and what the farm should include. The students also had to calculate the cost to fence their paddocks as well as lay turf. The students first had to design their farm using grid paper, selecting the correct scale so that they could fit their chosen animals. This posed a problem, as students found that their scale led them to have an interesting number of animals. One of our students Flynn, found that he could fit 8.43 cows in his cow paddock (so he decided he would have 8 cows and one calf). Once they had completed their design, they had the option to make a 3D representation of their farm.
Below is a selection of the students finished work, you will notice that the students chose a wide variety of ways to showcase their designs. Some chose to make theirs by hand, out of an assortment of materials, some used online 3D programs and some even designed their farms using Minecraft.
Here is an overview written by one of our Year 4 students:
Some of the grade 4s were in an extension maths group during Remote Learning. We got told to make a farm with cows, chickens, pigs, sheep and a house of 402m². It was to teach us about area and perimeter. I did mine differently to everyone else. It was a long sheet of card stuck together and grid paper spread out to be the paddocks. My scale was 1m per cm squared. I added lots more animals and activities including, horses, goats, donkeys, guinea pigs and rabbits, llamas, alpacas, a forest, a lake, a veggie patch, a compost, a kids play place, a barn, a pool house, a tea room and water tanks everywhere. I also had a dog kennel. The main animals had fences round them and the house was a 3D house made out of paper. I placed toy animals in the correct paddocks and wallah, I had my farm! It took a lot of time and effort and the help of my parents. I am very happy with the results and how individual it was. I still think the cows paddock is way too much because firstly, it took up half of my farm and secondly, it took forever!
In the end I named it, SNOWFLAKE FARM. Hannah CU3
Well done to all students that participated.
