Year 11 Incursions
This week our Year 11 Students started their Thursday with back to back Incursions. Period 1 they were engaged in a Fit to Drive – Steer Right program giving them advice and learning around how to be safe as they begin to take on the responsibility as Learner Drivers. Reports back from the students suggested that the information was very interesting and each of the Year 11’s who joined the program came away with at least one piece of learning that has informed their thinking about being safe on the road.
Then in Period 2 Sonya Karrass shared some amazing stories and advice around the topic of
‘Safe Partying”. Sonya has been visiting St. Peter's College for many years now and brings a very realistic and engaging perspective to how young people can protect themselves and protect their friends when placed in compromising situations. The students walked away with some interesting facts around drugs and alcohol, some real-life stories of the consequences of poor decisions and some strategies and some applications that students can use to keep safe i.e. Digital ID, Medical ID and Emergency + to begin. Regardless of the present level of social interaction, we can feel assured that experts like Sonya and the teachers at St. Peter’s College are sending the message that we care and want to inform and give strategies for the young people to call upon should the need arise.
House Leader Morning Tea with the Graduating Class
There is a great buzz on the Campus at the moment as the Year 12 students and staff reengage with the campus that has been the home away from home for this Graduating Class, for the past six years. On Tuesday the Year 12’s of each House enjoyed a shared (but COVID safe) morning tea hosted by their House Leaders. Together they told stories, shared memories, looked through old photos and simply enjoyed the company of each other. Unfortunately all Learning Advisors could not be present however there is some solace in the knowledge that the 12's themselves could enjoy this time together. In the coming days, Year 12 students and parents will be sent a letter outlining the end of year COVID safe, celebrations that will send our Graduands on, in a fitting way.
Together Once More
Before our next Newsletter ‘hits the stands’, we will have welcomed students and staff back on campus in a staggered way. The current planning is that Tuesday, 26 October 2021 and Wednesday, 27 October 2021 will see the Year 7, 8, 9 and 11 Students back for ‘on campus learning’. For that day’s Pastoral Lesson, we are planning a relaxing time in Tutor Groups to assist the transition back to campus learning. Then on Thursday, 28 October 2021 and Friday, 29 October 2021 our Year 8’s and 9’s return to Remote Learning to allow our Year 10’s on campus to settle back in.
Please rest assured that as teachers and staff we are acutely aware that returning to the campus after such a long period in lockdown will elicit mixed emotions. Some staff and students will be excited and ‘champing at the bit’; others will be nervously worried that they won’t fit in or worried about mixing in together after such a long time. In the Tutor Group time in the week leading up to the return to campus, Learning Advisors will be starting to have conversations about the return to campus learning trying to help the students to visualise what the return will look like and to help demystify the transition, normalising it as much as possible. As a Head of Campus and a parent myself, I am encouraged by the high levels of communication that have been coming from the school and I continue to encourage you to make contact with your child’s Learning Advisor or House Leader should you think that the transition back to on-campus learning will be particularly challenging for the young person in your home.
