Year 11 were in the spotlight this week attending ‘virtually’ two vital incursions

As our Year 11 students start to move into their final year of secondary school, we know that their world starts to expand with driving licences and choices around partying, alcohol and more freedom as they approach eighteen years of age – an adult. At eighteen the law considers your son or daughter an adult, but as parents and teachers we know there is a great difference in the behaviours and attitudes of an 18 year old adult compared with an adult at 25 yrs, 40 yrs and beyond. Therefore, it has always been our view that we need to support this journey into adulthood, while they are still at school. We do this in many ways, but pivotal are the programs Fit2Drive and Safe Partying.  Normally these programs would be presented onsite and in person. However, given our current situation we needed these programs to run online and via zoom.

Fit2Drive hosted its online webinar called Steer Right which is aimed at preparing young people to use the road safely in an interactive, fast paced quiz with scenarios and live discussion.

Students are equipped with the knowledge of relevant road laws to support their Graduated Licensing System (GLS) journey as they are guided by two dedicated facilitators in tackling current and common issues that young road users experience. This is a critical workshop for our next generation of road users.

SAFE PARTYING with Sonya Karras

The second seminar presented to Year 11 students was Safe Partying with Sonya Karras. Sonya is a regular presenter at the school who has tremendous experience in the Hospitality Industry which has, allowed Sonya to collect the stories and information she presents in her “Whole New World” safe partying program. A mix of solid strategies and funny anecdotes, Sonya kept our students entertained, informed and laughing while they learn. Sonya has a unique honesty and integrity in her work and presentations which aligns beautifully with our students. The information she provides is accurate and critical to support our young people navigate the potential pitfalls of partying as they enter the final years of schools.

Sonya is acclaimed speaker who works with agencies including

  • The Victorian Police
  • The Victorian Education Department.
  • Child Welfare Agencies

And has presented in more than 200 schools across Victoria.

Feedback from the students for both seminars was incredibly positive. The seminars provided us with the opportunity to focus on real life and wellbeing issues, very much needed during our current situation. I was particularly proud of the respect and engagement each and every year 11 student showed to our presenters.

Year 7 2022 Information Evening

We had wonderful evening this week, meeting our 2022 Year 7 students and their families. Zoom again was the vehicle for the evening and it worked incredibly well. The excitement on the faces of the soon to be Year 7s was wonderful and up lifting. The evening provided important information about curriculum, laptops, books, timetables, uniform, House Groups and the most important – the Tasty Trucks. It will be a new experience for our 2022 Year 7 coming back into full time school, after such a long absence due to COVID. But from their insightful questions and enthusiastic participation during the evening, they are a very resilient group and we look forward to welcoming them later in term for transition day.

Year 12 final days

We are nearing the final days of Year 12 classes before exams begin and the VCAL Project Evening. All Year 12 students and Parents/Carers will  shortly be receiving an up to date plan for these final days. So please look out for Operoo and email notifications.
