Student Ambassadors Project at Casey Tech School

Casey Tech school Berwick recruited Year 8 students who demonstrated talent in Science,  Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. The three students became Student Ambassadors with the aim of working alongside students from other Casey schools to develop technology projects for their schools or communities. The benefits of being a Student Ambassador include opportunities to increase confidence, skills and knowledge in leadership, advocacy, teamwork and communication, learn new STEAM skills,  provide feedback, advice and views on Casey Tech School programs that will feed into future strategic planning, and build strong connections with other young people who are interested in STEAM skills and design.

Student Ambassadors attended meetings after school with the goal to develop and lead activities and programs for primary students as part of the Casey Tech School STEAM FEST in August.  Unfortunately, the students were required to adjust their projects due to lockdown restrictions. Angelina Alex, Issa Jomon, Methasa Lokubatagodage were representative of St. Peter's College Clyde North Campus for 2021 They were flexible, reliable, creative and intellectual.

They have reflected on their experiences:

"The STEAM ambassador program was a great opportunity for me to learn more about some of my favourite subjects, through visits to the amazing Casey Tech centre, as well as virtual meetings with the amazing staff. Some activities we got to be involved in included looking around the many futuristic features of Casey Tech (I enjoyed looking at the medical equipment in particular), designing a badge for us and the future STEAM ambassadors and learning some valuable leadership skills. Our end goal as STEAM ambassadors was to consolidate all our learning into creating a science week festival for hundreds of primary school children, based on this year’s topic, food. Some of our festival events included making food with liquid nitrogen and 3D printing plastic food containers. Unfortunately, this was not doable, due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, the Chisolm staff were very flexible and put together an amazing celebration for us via zoom, as well as continuing to touch base with us and helping us in every way they could."

"This year, I and two other students (Methasa and Angelina) were given the opportunity to attend the STEAM Student Ambassadors program. This program gave us the privilege of experiencing the role of a leader, building relationships with other students that share the same interests, displaying and improving our collaboration skills, working in teams and improving my confidence level. The Casey Tech School was such an interesting environment that offered many resources to help students in exploring their thoughts and ideas. During the program, we worked on different projects, such as designing our own Student Ambassador badges, making decisions for the Casey Tech School and discussing what made a good leader. Our target was Science Week STEAM Fest, in which we would provide multiple stations to educate a large group of primary school students about our topic, Food. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances, we were unable to gather and implement our planning for this event. However, we thoroughly enjoyed the program and the staff were very supportive and helped us throughout our time at Casey Tech. I truly enjoyed this program because I was able to walk away after gaining many skills that can help me in the future."

SIS Chess

On Tuesday, 7 September 2021, ten students from Clyde North Campus participated in the SIS Chess Tournament. This was our first-time entry into the competition at our campus and our team did very well, achieving a sixth place. The teams played 7 rounds of 6 minutes per game on an online chess platform. This fast-paced activity required a high level of concentration and skill. Our team players were:

Poorab BhavsarVinuk Kumaraperu Arachchige Don
Thomas GrahamDeclan Mack
Kevin Huynh (top scorer for our school)Keiran Mant
Het KachaFateh Deep Singh
Nikith KaluwitharanaJapjot Singh

Student Reflection:

"Getting ready for the chess tournament was nerve-wracking. I was feeling really excited because I love chess but nervous at the same time. It took place on a website and we attended a zoom meeting. I was happy with my final results even though the school didn't come in the first place. It was a lot of back and forth between schools which made it more exciting. After the chess tournament, it has sparked my interest to strive to get even better, so hopefully, I get a better result the next time. The main thing is that I tried my hardest and had fun! "
