Sports and Camps

Physical Education

Another great two weeks of physical activity has taken place at Miners Rest Primary School . We have passed the half way mark of Term One; the count down for the Sports Days is well and truly on.

During Week 4 the whole school has been enhancing their running skills and practising their shuttle relay and also long distance running. The Foundation and One/Two students really tested themselves out running 5 laps of the tennis courts. Most students were successful in completing this without requiring a quick drink break between laps. The Three-Six students put their feet to good work running laps of the oval.

Long jump was also on the agenda. Those that were not fussed about getting sand in their shoes really went for it. Many students celebrated the development of their landings.

This week has seen the students reach new heights as they tackled the High Jump. Safety is a major element when executing a successful jump and landing correctly on the mat. Technique was explicitly taught before any attempts were made. The Three-Six students worked on developing their skills in the "Scissor Kick" and "Frosbury Flop" techniques and then they worked on increasing the height of their jumps. Well done to all of those who put in their best efforts.

Thank you to Hayden W from Room 19 for his assistance and support during some of the Foundation and One/Two PE classes last week.

Sprint Trials

Last week we had the year Three – Six students participate in the sprint trials. After an initial attempt on the Wednesday, the trials were abandoned due to the weather. Postponed until the Friday, the weather again looked like it was going to ruin our chances but instead the trials went ahead and were a success.

Thank you to the teachers for taking time out of their busy classes to allow the trials to go ahead. The Three-Six students are also to be congratulated for their sportsmanship, encouragement and for their patience. This allowed for everyone to give it a red hot go and for the trials to go ahead seamlessly. This was a great rehearsal for the up and coming Sports Days where we are sure they will be amazing leaders for the younger students.

Katherine and Rick's Secrets to Success.

It is important to have a common understanding between the students and teachers on what it means to be successful. We continue to run our PE lessons based on Katherine and Rick’s Secrets to Success:

We can refer to the Secrets to Success to compliment, encourage and redirect students in class. Students can also use the Secrets to Success to identify and celebrate their own actions or the actions of their peers during a lesson.

Parents and Guardians can now make reference to our Secrets to Success when discussing PE with their children.

Participation is an important and sometimes challenging aspect of PE lessons. To ensure that participation is adhered to, we ask that if your child has an injury or if there is any reason why their participation may need to be modified or excused, then a signed note from parents or guardians would be expected and greatly appreciated.

We hope that you enjoy the rest of your week.

Stay active and most importantly, have FUN!

From Katherine and Rick.
