The Power of Connection
One of my favourite times during our School Chapel Services is the Passing of the Peace. This is a time when all members of the congregation have an opportunity to greet each other, look one other in the eye, shake their hand and wish them a sign of the peace, generally by saying "Peace be with You". The first few seconds of the Passing of the Peace can sometimes be a little awkward; however, it doesn’t take long before all students are enthusiastically greeting each other and there is a real buzz across the congregation. I enjoy stepping back during this time and watching the broad smiles as students who would maybe not normally interact with each other during the school day, warmly greeting each other. When the congregation then settles for the rest of the service, there is always a very different feeling of warmth and connection in the Chapel.
Our students certainly enjoy a high level of connection with each other. Our Secondary House Groups made up of students from Year 8 through to Year 12, meet every morning with their House Group teacher. We also enjoy a number of whole school events and activities where students have the opportunity to learn, interact and enjoy each other’s company in meaningful ways. Founders' Day, House Days, and our Easter Eucharist are just a few annual events where this connection occurs.
In a time when many members of our community feel lonely or isolated, despite the overwhelming influence of the internet and social media, it is important for us as a school to develop students who understand the need to connect with each other in healthy and appropriate ways. During the term, Head of Charter House and Humanities teacher, Pauline Galley’s Year 10 RAVE class has been visiting the Amana Living - Thomas Scott Hostel in Camillo. The students have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to develop meaningful connections with the residents through art and music activities. It has been wonderful to see our students engaging in conversation and taking a real interest in the lives of the elderly residents.
All the best.
