Year 12 VCAL:  Volunteering in the Community

This semester I have been working at Helping Hands which is located on Fullarton Road in Airport West.

This organisation provides emergency support to Victorian families and individuals who are suffering as a result of extreme circumstance. The Op Shop I volunteered in (The Vintage Shop) is a treasure trove of quality clothing, footwear, books, toys, furniture, homewares and bric-a-brac. The prices are low to ensure that everyone can afford to wear nice clothes, furnish their homes, and buy toys for their kids.

The store is always busy, as people come in all the time and check out what we have on offer (there are new items arriving daily).  I really enjoy meeting and interacting with different people from the community.

The tasks I have to undertake include sorting clothes and bric-a-brac, serving customers and organising displays. One of the most enjoyable tasks I did this week was reorganising the jewellery display. It took me a few hours, but I was happy with the end result.

The whole experience has been really rewarding. Giving back to our community has been a humble experience.
