BILLY CART GRAND PRIX

PERFORMANCE WEEK NEXT WEEK FOR GRADES 3-5

Our children are a-buzz as Performance Week approaches. In the final week of Term One, all children in Grades 3-5 have an opportunity to perform for their class during their usual Music class. Performance is an important part of the Music curriculum and ‘Performance Week’ provides an opportunity to do so in a low-key environment, among friends. What children choose to present to their class is up to them, but it must include a musical element (eg: not stand-up comedy or juggling). Dance, instrumental solos and ensembles, group and solo songs are all welcome. Past offerings have included, aerobics routines to music, a didgeridoo demonstration, clapping songs, beat boxing and original compositions! Backing tracks, brought along to class on a USB, can greatly enhance your child’s performance. (NB: Please understand, I do not have time to locate individual music for your child’s performance online, as we may have 15 – 20 performances to get through in an hour.)

Children need not fear performing alone, and frequently organise themselves in duos, trios and small groups. This is why it is common to see children practicing together at lunch and recess. Performance companions must be members of your child’s current class to ensure other learning programs can proceed as planned. Audience and performance etiquette are always an additional focus, and, where time allows,  student peers offer constructive feedback or ask questions.

Occasionally parents ask if they can attend Performance Week, and while I appreciate the show of support my answer is invariably ‘no’. Please understand that for some children the prospect of performing to their own grade is daunting enough without the added element of someone else’s parent in the audience. For this reason, we offer a graduated range of performance opportunities at RNPS through our choirs, assembly performances, band, instrumental concerts, bi-annual production, Carols On The Green, and massed events beyond our own school.

Positive, low-key support from the home-front is always a plus, but please avoid transferring worries YOU may have about performing to your child. Nerves are to be expected, and are the healthy response of someone wanting to do their best. Children can learn to harness ‘butterflies” to focus their performance, and learn the value of rehearsal, preparation and resilience in the process. It is always a privilege to witness your children grow in confidence, and challenge themselves, as they perform for each other.

PARKING AND TRAFFIC CONTROLS AROUND OUR SCHOOL

Parking and traffic controls around schools play an important part in keeping children safe.

These controls ensure the crossing supervisor has a clear field of vision in all directions and can identify possible hazardous traffic conditions.

Some of the parking controls include:

  • No stopping within 20m on the approach side of a crossing.
  • No stopping within 10m on the departure side of a school crossing.
  • No stopping within 10m of an intersection (unless signs say you can).

Please show some etiquette when using the Pick Up/Drop Off Zone by not cutting in front of others waiting to enter.

Also, please ensure that you enter and exit the Staff Carpark and OSHC drop off area safely. It is a tight area, with both cars and pedestrians frequently using the space and it is not safe for people to hurry, double park or stop in the middle of the carpark. A reminder that parking in front of the path ways at either end is prohibited due to pedestrian safety.
