This week The Mercury did a feature on Tasmania's leading sports schools. The article featured only schools that offered Year 11 and 12 sport and identified some of their notable alumni. It was amazing to note the number of boys who commenced their journey at SVC and the College's performances in 'Open Ranks'
Notable Sporting Alumni:
- Scott Brennan (Gold Medallist rower)
- Sean Clingeleffer and Michael Di Venuto, current Aust assistant coach (SVC only) (cricket for both Tasmania and Australia)
- Riley Meredith, Caleb Jewel, Sam Rainbird and recently Mitch Owen have all played for the Tassie Tigers and Hurricane teams. There have also been some Tasmanian Tigers rookie contracted players, Keegan Oates, Liam Devlin and Jack White. Interestingly Nathan Ellis was a SVC staff member.
- Jack Hale holds the Australian under 18 100m record and has represented Australia at Under-20 World Championships and Commonwealth Games. Jacob Despard has also had a successful athletics career Stawell Gift 2018.
- Matt Bevilacqua is an Ironman Champion and for the past four years holds the title for the World Paddleboard. During his time at the College he also swam for the College.
- Alex Peroni graduated at the College in 2017 and has had an extensive career as an Australian racing driver and was awarded 2016 Challenge Monoplace champion. He continues to race today in Formula 3.
- Sid Taberlay started competitive cycling when he was 15 at SVC and was selected for his first Australian Team in 2000. Sid Taberlay, a Tasmanian cyclist made his Olympic debut at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, finishing 23rd in the cross country mountain bike event. In his career Taberlay also competed in nine World Championships and also placed sixth at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Scott Bowden is a talented cyclist and mountain bike rider. He represented Australia in 2016 at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Nathan Earle is a professional cyclist (SVC only)
- Jack Welch Hockey represented Australia in Men's Hockey Team and Josh Brookes, Gobijan Gill (SVC only)recently graduated at the College in 2019. He is an up and coming hockey player with being selected as an underage Australian player and is currently a member of the Tassie Tigers Team. who has the potential to play at the highest level.
- Alex Cisak played EPL soccer for Manchester United and was in Youth academies at Leicester.

- St Virgil’s won the SATIS T20 competition in 2019 as a Year 7-10 school against all 7-12 schools.
- St Virgil’s regularly features in finals and wins SSATIS/SATIS and Non SSATIS competitions (team sports like water polo, hockey, soccer, afl, badminton), along with having a strong record of winning Junior Boys Shields and Pennants at SSATIS/SATIS Carnivals such as Cross Country, Swimming and Athletics.
- St Virgil’s has won the Tassie Hawks Cup (AFL) a record 5 out of 7 years…and runner up twice.
- St Virgil’s has won the National EREA Football (soccer) Tournament an unprecedented 4 out of 7 years.
- St Virgil’s has won numerous Southern Region and State Basketball Championships.
- St Virgil’s also has a number of underage Southern, Tasmanian and Australian representatives and record holders across a number of sports to big to mention here. Again, the majority of GYC boys mentioned in your article are graduates of SVC.
- St Virgil’s has a strong and developing junior rowing programme with an eye on returning to 7-12 competition. 2021 Head of the River Junior Boys Shield Winners and 2021 State All Schools Junior Boys Winners…..plus a host of individual placings.
