Grade 3 - What we have been working on

The students in grade 3 have been learning money in mathematics. Working with money is an effective way to consolidate our third graders' basic mathematical place value knowledge, such as skip counting, as well as more advanced addition and subtraction using the decimals with cents. Students have also been able to apply their multiplication strategies when solving money problems. Images of money have been displayed in the classroom and we have provided our students with ample opportunities to identify the different bills and coins using the pretend money during class. We have been discussing how coins differ from one another and what the associated values are. Teachers in the grade 3 team have planned mathematics activities to engage students, such as creating and totaling shopping lists and planning events, so they can relate the topic to the real world. Our students have had great fun!
