Book Week

August 19-25 - Read Grow Inspire

Each year since 1945 the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has brought children and books together across Australia through CBCA Book Week. During this time we spend one week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. Together, we share and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading.  The theme this year is Read Grow Inspire.

At SKiPPS we grab any opportunity to celebrate reading. We have lots of exciting things happening to celebrate the 2023 CBCA Book Week.

All students will be attending a performance from Meerkat Productions who adapt two books shortlisted by the CBCA for the Book of the Year Awards. One show is a book from the Picture Book Category and another from the Younger Readers Chapter Book category. Meerkat Productions create 2 x 40-minute musical productions including original songs and puppetry.

The Foundation to Year 2 students will be viewing a live performance of Frank’s Red Hat by Sean Avery and the Year 3 to 6s will view a show adaptation of The Way of Dog by Zana Fraillon.

We also have some fabulous authors coming to talk to the children about the art of writing, to share their passions and processes about writing stories, and discuss the process of having their story published.  Gus Gordon, author of Wendy (one of the mentor texts we are using to model high quality writing), is coming to speak with the Foundation, 1/2 & 3/4 students and Jack Heath is sharing some of his successful books with the Year 5/6s.

We also have local author, Robert Lorenzon visiting with his dog Spike, to share his story of having his book published. Many of the photographs in the book are taken locally. Robert is keen to share how he went about telling his story and how writing about his beloved dog was a great achievement and thrill.  Finally, it is exciting to share that Deborah Frenkell, author of CBCA 2023 nominated book will be taking Foundation students on a journey within our school, to model how the ‘idea’ behind her story is in all of our back yards or local streets. Deborah's activity with the Foundation students will be their writing stimulus for the following weeks.

Book Week Dress Up Parade : Friday August 25th

The Year 6 Library Leadership team will be leading all students in a dress up parade on Friday 25th August after our assembly. We encourage all students to dress up as a character from a book that they have enjoyed. This continues to be a highlight on our school calendar as the students (& parents) share their creative thinking and costume making skills. If your child is stuck for ideas, encourage them to chat to their teacher and/or peers to share some ideas. All classrooms have been allocated a tub of the 2023 nominated books and teachers are enjoying sharing all of the rich stories with their classes. There are many characters within these new nominated books that could be the idea behind your costume. These books will make their way into classroom libraries once book week is over so the students can continue to have access to them at all times.
