SOMERS CAMP

On Tuesday the 13th of June, ten students from our school embarked on the journey of a lifetime. Somers Camp is a 9-day outdoor camp full of fun and adventure that only few students get to go on.

Every two years, 160 students in years 5 and 6 from our Whittlesea area have the chance to go to Somers, making this a once in a lifetime opportunity.  The camp’s main ambition is to create interschool friendships, so what’s a better way to do that than put 20 kids together in a cabin. This is what happened and the end result was a big family.

We got to know one another pretty well and we collaborated our ideas to make things work. Everyone got along fairly well which meant there was always someone to turn to if times got tough. Making friends made the Somers experience all the more amazing.

The activities that Somers Camp offered are definitely something worth mentioning. Each lesson taught us something new and tested our limits, making this a thoroughly beneficial experience. An activity that many loved was the Challenge Swing. You’re hooked up to a rope and you are raised 18 and a half metres into the air. Then you pulled a rope and you swing for about 20 seconds. It was one of the highlights of camp and the thrill will not be forgotten. Some of the other activities were boating, flying fox, bush cooking and rock climbing. They helped enhance our skills and let us learn more about ourselves and the world around us. There was always something to do so we were always entertained.

Speaking of always being entertained, evening activities provided us with an immense amount of fun. On concert nights the skits were full to the brim with comedy and clever humour. Watching fellow school mates perform in their ridiculous costumes made the skits even funnier. The disco was another memorable event because it let us blow off some steam and let loose. We ended Somers with a sing along around a makeshift campfire (some sticks, cellophane and a torch), leaving us on a high note.

Now, when you go to camp one of the most important things is the FOOD. The food the camp provided was certainly full of variety in every meal, leading us to be consistently full.

Somers Camp was a unique experience that will never be forgotten by the people who were lucky enough to go.
