Visual Arts

This week in Visual Arts, Foundation students continued and completed making their collage suns form last lesson by adding the 6 yellow strips for the rays.

They started a Shape City Collage by cutting and pasting coloured paper shapes creating a city scene, starting with the big buildings first and then adding windows, doors and roof tops to the buildings. Year 1/2 students started to create a newspaper animal collage, by first tracing round an animal body template onto newspaper and pasting on to coloured backing paper, adding extra features, eyes, ears, legs and a tail by using more newspaper or coloured paper. Year 3/4 students completed their inspired Kandinsky ‘concentric circle’ collage art piece from last lesson. Year 5/6 students also completed their inspired Keith Haring character collage.

Culture Studies

Last week in Culture Studies, students continued to learn about the Turkish culture by looking at their famous landmarks such as The Hagia Sophia, The Ephesus, Cappadocia, Bosphorus Bridge, Basilica Cistern and The Blue Mosque which has over 200 stained glass windows and inside is lined with more than 20,000 handmade tiles and a ceramic that is turquoise in colour. All students were inspired to create their own stain glass window art piece. Foundation, students cut and stuck cellophane paper onto a black paper frame with contact. Year 1/2 students used an image, where they used soft pastels to colour in, then they brushed oil over it which then becomes translucent. Year 3/4 students used a black marker to trace over the outline image over plastic, they then used coloured markers to colour in the image. Year 5/6 students also used a black marker to trace over an outline image over plastic, using clear glue and food colouring to make-up a paint to give the stain glass effect.

PE

Over the first 3 weeks of term all students have been learning the fundamental skills of basketball along with the rules. Last week students put these skills and ideas together to play some minor games. It was great to see all students skills improve over the course of the three week program.

This week, students started looking at and participating in Aerosports. This is a national program where schools can develop their Aerobic dance skills and put them into practice to eventually choreograph their own routine and if they wish can go onto compete against other schools.

As this is the first time we are participating in this program, we are looking to run our own Aerosports dance competition at the end of this term, or at the start of term 4. Over the next 4-5 weeks students will continue to develop their skills in aerosports as well as develop their teamwork in creating their own choreographed routine.

I am very excited for this program and this week, all students had a great time during the first lesson.

Health

Over the past two weeks, students have moved onto the topic of Help Seeking. They identify people that they can ask for help when they have a problem or need support, but also realise that they can be a great help to others including family, friends, peers and teachers by understanding how other people feel in different situations.

Library Update

After having found our team of students to help in the library for the rest of the year, we have started strong.

Lots of new books have been added to the library, ready to be borrowed. Our freshest additions include the Percy Jackson and Trials of Apollo series, new releases by Anh Do such as The Champ and Hot Dog and lots of books shortlisted for the Children’s Book Council of Australia prize. Keep an eye out on the shelves and make sure you grab one of these great reads!

Thank you so much as always to all the families who have donated books and to all the students who are helping twice a week at recess to keep the library neat, tidy and organised.
