Police in Schools Presentation
The use of electronic devices, inclusive of mobile phones and computers, have opened up the door to an array of obstacles, which in reality, need to be carefully negotiated. It is common to see young people engaged on social media apps without understanding the real implications of their interactions. Coupled with this is the reality that photos (many of which are inappropriate of nature) and footage of individuals and situations can be quickly uploaded and shared with the local and wider communities, not to mention the nation and the world!
We were fortunate to have our 'Police in Schools' program run this week at the College for Year 8 & 9 students. The purpose was to educate students on safe and appropriate use of phones and social media apps, as well as to help them identify the dangers that lurk through inappropriate use. The two Officers who spoke to students gave the stark reality of how lives can be turned upside down when images or footage is shared, particularly without consent, and when something that seems so innocent initially can quickly turn into chaos. In addition, the police spoke about the laws surrounding the uploading of images and footage, particularly without consent and the implications of this for individuals.
Overall, a very educative and interesting presentation based on the 'e-Commission's Cyber Safety program'. It’s a great reminder to touch base with your children and discuss the importance of remaining safe online.
‘Respect’ is one of our College Values. However, it can be an attribute that can be difficult at times to define. Showing Respect towards others allows them to feel valued, appreciated and safe in any environment. During Term 2, Middle Years focused on unpacking what Respect looked like and how it could be lived within our College grounds and beyond.
I would encourage each family to click on the link below and delve into how to assist your young developing adolescent understand how the word Respect can be played out in their everyday lives. This link takes you to a practical guide that not only makes you think about our own actions as parents and guardians, but also a guide as to how to have a productive conversation around the topic with your young person.
