Aussie of the Month

The 'Aussie of the Month' is delivered under the auspices of the National Australia Day Council Network and recognises students who are contributing to their community and reflecting some of the values we share as Australians:

Fair go – not just how we apply ourselves but providing opportunity for all.

Mateship – generosity of spirit and compassion for those in need.

Respect – of self, others, our community, and the environment; and

Inclusion – celebrating of difference and the rights we are all entitled to.

Congratulations to Jacinta Wangira from 3C for receiving this award for her dedication to the establishment and ongoing running of an Art and Craft Club for Junior Years students.  A very worthy recipient indeed!

Celebrations Around the World in Year 3

Last week Year 3 spent a day exploring different celebrations around the world. There were many stations to investigate, including making Rangoli with coloured rice, Valentine's Day crafts, painting cherry blossoms, making wedding dresses with toilet paper, crafting a Star of David, creating Chinese New Year lanterns and birthday games, like pin the tail on the donkey and dancing to the Nutbush song. I really enjoyed the cherry blossom painting because I got to use different materials and textures, like popcorn and broccoli. This painting linked to the Japanese Hinami Festival, and I liked learning about Japan. I also enjoyed the wedding ceremony station because I got to wrap someone in toilet paper and make it into a dress.

Junior Years (3-5) Athletics Carnival

The cold weather and showers did not deter participants in the Junior Years Athletics Carnival on Tuesday. The competition was run in great spirit with all Houses and competitors cheering and encouraging each other to do their very best on the day. Athletics events along with many novelty events were keenly contested (Tug of War was the most exciting) with Baker House coming out on top in the points for the day. Well done to all students involved and a big thank you to the PE Staff for their efforts in organising the day.

Celebrating Learning

To complete our last Units of Inquiry Prep E, F and Year 1E held a book exhibition. Their books were displayed and shared with families. The Prep classes explored the ‘How we express ourselves unit’ to develop understandings about how we communicate and the many ways we can convey an idea, create a product and exchange information.  This allowed the children to broaden their own modes of communication, whilst also developing their ability to listen to others and develop their ability to be a part of an ongoing conversation.

The Yr. 1E children explored the ‘How we express ourselves unit’ to develop understandings about story telling and how stories engage an audience and communicate meaning. This allowed the children to broaden their own interpretation of stories and the ways stories can be communicated and shared. They developed their understanding of characters and the elements of a story and learned the importance of audience.

It was wonderful to see our children beam with pride at sharing their beautifully displayed work. As a community we enjoyed sharing the joy and opportunity to celebrate the many wonderful ways our students are growing and learning.
