Today in the 8th of August, we celebration the feast day of Australia’s first and only St Mary MacKillop

Mary Helen MacKillop was born in Fitzroy January 15th 1842 and died in Sydney 8th August 1909. She was canonised 17th October 2010.

Saint Mary MacKillop was the eldest of eight children, her parents Flora and Alexander MacKillop, were Catholic immigrants from Scotland.

Mary went to work as a teacher in a little country town in South Australia called Penola. There she met Father Julian Tenison Woods who also wanted to do something for the poor children who could not afford to pay the money needed to go to school.

Together, in 1866, they began the first St Joseph’s School in an old stable. The Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart are often called  ‘Josephites’ or ‘Brown Joey’s’ because they wear brown gowns.

One of Saint Mary MacKillop's most generous quotes is..

Never see a need without

doing something about it

This weekend some of our children will be receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist (First Holy Communion).

As part of the preparation the Year 3 classes organised a Bread Making Day and here are some reflections from some children:

Bread baking day was fantastic! We made the bread, shared it and ate it. We also coloured the peace doves with dots. We did a drawing of us sharing a meal with our family. It was a blast!

Bread baking day was pretty exciting. It was good that Steve from another school could come. It was good to have people from different Gr.3 classes in my group. We made bread for the Eucharist and then we shared it around like a feast.

Last week we baked bread to share as a meal to celebrate our up and coming sacraments. Fr Michael came to visit and joined in some of the activities. I am really looking forward to receiving the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation this weekend.
