Primary School

Head of Primary

Term 3 has begun smoothly with teachers reporting that students are very settled and working hard. There are only 9 weeks of school this term, and nearly all levels of Primary will be involved in the camping program, which is very exciting for students and very busy for staff!

Netball District Championships

23 Year 5/6 students participated in the Netball District Championships in Week 1 at Somerville Recreation Centre. Both teams received 3rd place in the Division Championships which was a great effort.  Playing on indoor courts was a new experience for many of these students and they represented Bayside well.

Canteen

A reminder the Canteen on South Campus is closed on Monday and Tuesday and only open from Wednesday to Friday for Primary lunch orders. There are lots of delicious options on the menu which can be downloaded from our website at https://www.baysidecc.vic.edu.au/parents/canteen

Headlice

Parents are requested to check their child(ren)’s hair weekly for nits.  If nits are found, then students may return to school as soon as they have had their hair treated.

Behaviour Incidents

If students have any major behaviour incidents at school, teachers will inform parents about their child’s involvement.  While every endeavour is made to investigate all students' versions of events, parents will only be informed of the follow-up that relates to their own child, for privacy reasons. Thank you for your understanding.

1/2 Class News

Fostering a love of reading in the formative years is essential for each child’s academic growth. I love the transition that takes place when my students read because they want to, not because they have to.

From an early age, I remember my Dad with his morning coffee sitting at the breakfast table reading his bible. A wonderful example to me of his routine starting the day immersed in scripture.

We are blessed to have such a wide range of literature available to the students. In class 1/2J we start the day with a bible story, a Psalm or worship song lyrics, we participate in Guided Reading sessions during Quick Lit, we also model and teach reading strategies to dissect and decode new vocabulary, we have hundreds of texts available to us using our digital media space. Each child has the opportunity to enjoy their chosen book after lunch to have a moment of stillness and I love seeing the joy that narratives and information texts give them.

Thank you parents for partnering with us and nurturing this love of written words. Never underestimate that precious time of reading to your child at bedtime or hearing them read to you (you miss it when they are teenagers!) Happy reading everyone!

Inter-School Netball

It was an honour to be the captain of the girls Inter-School Netball Team 2023. It was an amazing experience to learn what it was like to be a sport’s captain. Everyone in the Girls’ Netball Team tried their absolute best at every warm up, every game, and every training. It was great to be able to go through to the Netball Division Championships. Even though we didn’t win, we still put all of our effort on to the court, and the team were great sports. I would like to say thank you to the teachers for giving me the opportunity to be captain, and creating an amazing Girls Netball team, 2023.

5/6 Short Stories

I tried my best… and it worked. I won the longest running race of the year. I seriously ran a MARATHON! I felt like I was going to blow up but I didn't.I was breathing fast as a race car until I finally sped past the finish line. What a relief!

Levi Milburne (Year 5)

“I can’t do it.” I said, my heart beating as fast as ever. “You never know, unless you try,” my friend replied with a smile on her face.  I stepped forward onto the stage.  “THUMP THUMP THUMP!” my heart beated.  I started performing and loud applause filled the room. A large smile spread across my face. I did It!

Winter Nixon (Year 5)

A wise man said, “You may fool me and everybody else, but you can't fool yourself.”Then I thought, “Do I stop pretending or continue to lie? If I continue, will all I know turn to lies?”

Jack Willams (Year 5)

“For sale: Baby shoes. Never worn.”

My husband calls, tears roll down my cheeks. All I want is a child, but one will never come. My husband and I had bought everything…but for nothing. We travel home in silence.

Leilani Lancaster (Year 5)

“Just remember, even your worst days only have 24 hours," said my friend.

“Oh sure, I have no money,” I think, as I walk past yet another bar and see a cascade of lights calling my name. I imagine everything I own dropping down the slots.

Josh Blashki (Year 6)

When Rye woke up, he was in a particularly grumpy mood. He got dressed in his school clothes and stomped downstairs. His older sister had made his favourite breakfast, Rice Bubbles with yoghurt and honey. He yelled at her, tipped the cereal in the bin and slammed the bowl in the sink. Just as he sat down to read his favourite comics, his Mum yelled from the kitchen, “Rye, I made your lunch and got your bag ready because you need to head to the bus stop!!”

“UGH!” cried Rye, “When can I have a moments’ peace?!” He ambled down the road only to find the bus just pulling out of the bus stop. “WHY IS MY LIFE SO HORRIBLE!” he screamed. He pretended not to notice when people stuck their heads out of their windows, gawking. He took off, sprinting the 5 kilometre run to his school. When he got there, the principal was waiting at the gate, “You’re almost 20 minutes late Rye, this is not good enough. You’ll have to stay in at recess to finish what you missed out on.” Rye groaned inwardly.

When he finally got to his classroom, he sat next to his best friend Ameera, who whispered, “Don’t worry, even your worst days only have 24 hours.” He smiled his thanks and all of a sudden felt a lot better. He finished his day with a grin.
