Semester Two in English

It has been an exceptional start to the term, with students enthusiastically diving into their second semester units with great enthusiasm.

Our Year 10 classes have begun with a context study of Elie Wiesel’s novel, ‘Night’ to foster a deep understanding of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. Through collaborative efforts, our students conducted thorough research to comprehensively explore the purpose, location, and conditions of the various Nazi camps during World War II. The students showcased their new learning through engaging poster presentation.

In Year 12 students, are continuing their exploration of the Presenting Argument area of study, focusing on refining their speeches. They have dedicated themselves to applying lessons on oral deliver and body language when practicing their presentations. Their efforts were witnessed Monday, as students confidently presented their persuasive speeches a range of topics including treatment of women in government, artificial intelligence, changes in local bin laws and access to tertiary education. We were proud to see students engage their audiences with complex arguments, influential use of language and fine-tuned performance skills.

Our Junior School students are building their knowledge of persuasive texts by learning how to analyse and present arguments. Our team have developed engaging literacy activities to build their skills. For instance, Year 8 students employed semantic gradients to showcase their understanding of tone. Additionally, the Year 7 students identified various forms of evidence in persuasive speeches and engaged in a posit activity to analyse the effect of statistics on audiences.

Looking ahead, we are excited to see the ongoing development of our students’ literacy and English skills throughout the upcoming term.
