QGSSSA Winter Fixtures Update

After two rounds of QGSSSA Winter Fixtures, our teams are performing exceptionally well. On Saturday 22 July, we played St Margaret’s in Round 2 of the Winter Fixtures competition. Our students displayed unwavering determination and skill across four sports: Hockey, Netball, Tennis, and Volleyball. With twelve teams representing our school, the day was packed with thrilling and outstanding performances.

The Scoreboard: Seven Wins from 12 Teams

We are proud to announce that out of the 12 teams that participated, we emerged victorious in seven of them.

Hockey Heroes: A Dominating Display

Our Hockey team truly shone on the field, delivering a dominating display of grit. With impeccable teamwork and strategic gameplay, the Senior A team secured an impressive victory. Their hard work and dedication in training is clearly paying off, and we couldn't be prouder of their achievements.

Netball Superstars: Nailing the Nitty-Gritty

Our Netball teams put on a stellar performance, showcasing their agility, precision, and quick thinking on the court. Their commitment to perfecting their skills in training translated to some thrilling moments during the matches. While not all matches resulted in victory, the perseverance and sportsmanship displayed by our teams was truly commendable.

Tennis Aces: Smashing Success

Our Tennis teams displayed remarkable finesse and prowess with their racquets. The intense back-and-forth rallies were a sight to behold, and the athletes demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship throughout the games. We celebrate the victories our teams secured and acknowledge the valuable lessons learned from some closely contested matches.

Volleyball Victories: Spiking to Triumph

Our Volleyball teams electrified the court with their enthusiasm. Their spirited performances, incredible serves, and powerful spikes led to two from four teams well-earned victories. The atmosphere was electric, and we commend all teams for their efforts in representing our school with pride.

Beyond the wins and losses, it is essential to celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship that was evident throughout the day. Our athletes displayed respect, encouragement, and support for their opponents, embodying the Clayfield spirit.

A special thanks goes out to our coaches, teachers, and support staff who have dedicated countless hours to training, organisation of fixtures and cheering on our teams.

We look forward to more thrilling competitions ahead as we head into Round 3 against St Peter’s.

Wishing everyone the best for the upcoming fixtures and beyond!

Primary Sport

Clayfield College had a strong representation at the Andrews Cup Netball competition, featuring 12 girls each in the Junior A and Open B teams. This highly anticipated and competitive event gathered all 10 Andrews Cup schools, making it one of the biggest team sport events of the year.

Our teams had trained diligently for eight weeks, practicing twice a week, and even participating in a practice competition, which prepared them for the day. Throughout the event, the girls showcased impressive improvements in their individual skills and match play.

The Junior A team played five games and demonstrated competitiveness in all matches, some of which had thrillingly close finishes. The highlight of the day was their tightly contested match against Toowoomba Anglican School, resulting in a draw. Although our final position in the round games prevented us from qualifying for the finals or classification rounds, the girls performed admirably.

As for the Open B teams, they achieved some success in the round games and came close to winning many matches. They earned a spot in the classification round, where they faced Somerville House, the Open B winners from 2022. Despite their excellent teamwork and impressive defensive efforts, they couldn't match the opposition's goal scoring. Ms Amy Lewin, the QGSSSA Netball Coordinator and coach, did a fantastic job, and the girls showed evident enjoyment and improvement, especially in their last game.

A big thank you to Mr Tim O'Rourke for his exceptional preparation and positive encouragement. Mrs Teresa Heinemann, Alegria Heinemann, and Mrs Beatrice Peters deserve appreciation for scoring all the games throughout the day. Moreover, the enthusiastic support from Clayfield College supporters and parents on the sidelines made a significant difference.

Looking Ahead

The Andrews Cup Athletics Competition is scheduled for Thursday 17 August. Athletics training has already begun, with over 30 girls attending the sessions on Tuesday afternoon. We encourage even more girls to join the training and participate in the upcoming event.

Student Highlights

Mia Geere (Year 10) - AFL

Mia Geere has been named as Captain of the Queensland Schools U15 AFL team for the Schools Sport Australia National Championships currently underway in Ballarat. Mia was presented with her Queensland jersey last week by AFLW Lions Captain, Bree Koenen. The Queensland team recorded a nail-biting victory against Victoria over the weekend with a score of 37 – 36.

Chloe Noon (Year 11) - Cross Country

Congratulations to Chloe Noon on her outstanding achievement at the recent Queensland Schools State Cross Country Championships in Hervey Bay.

We are thrilled to share the fantastic news that Chloe finished 9th in the 16 years 4km race! Her dedication and passion for running has truly paid off, and we couldn't be prouder of her incredible performance.

Chloe will toe the start line at the Queensland Athletics State Cross Country Championships on Saturday 29 July in Toogoolawah vying for selection on the Queensland Athletics team to compete at the National Cross Country Championships in Canberra later this year.

Isla Cullen (Year 6) - Gymnastics

Isla Cullen proudly represented Delta Gymnastics at the Queensland Club Championships team event, where her team achieved an impressive first-place finish for Level 7 in Queensland. Among the cherished moments captured, one photo shows her alongside her teammate Iara Chaves, who is in Year 7.

Additionally, Isla had the honour of representing Queensland at the 2023 Border Challenge, competing against teams from New South Wales, Western Australia, Victoria, and South Australia. Despite Isla's team securing a commendable second place overall for Level 7, they were ineligible for the award due to a one-per-state rule, as the other Queensland team clinched the first-place victory. Nonetheless, the competition showcased the talent of Queensland Gymnastics, with six out of the ten Queensland gymnasts hailing from Delta Gymnastics.

Looking ahead, Isla eagerly anticipates participating in Andrews Cup Gymnastics later this year, aiming to further demonstrate her skills and dedication to the sport.
