Year 11 VM Work Related

Careers Explorer Excursion

Year 11 Work Related students ventured to the CBD and engaged in the Big Build Careers Explorer excursion. Students gained an insight into the many different careers and industries connected with the Big Build infrastructure initiative.

Students had an opportunity to interact with the exhibits and experiences in the Metro HQ Visitor Centre, such as going on a virtual reality tour of the Big Build master plan, model making and exploring the many digital artefacts showcasing the Big Build.

Students then participated in the Career Explorer Workshop, where they engaged in a career information session, worked in groups to complete team-building tasks and practiced their interview skills during mock interviews using career cards to prompt discussion.

Additionally, students discussed their career aspirations using the Ikigai principle (a Japanese concept that encourages individuals to strive for happiness by finding a sense of purpose, fulfilment and joy), thus inspiring students to explore a meaningful profession they are passionate about. Students reflected on four key questions when investigating how they could achieve Ikigai in regard to their career pathway(s):

  • What do you love?
  • What are you good at?
  • What can you be paid for?
  • What does the world need?

These industry visits and career excursions, provide a valuable real-world experience about the world of work post-secondary, and the Vocational Major students were very enthusiastic participants on the day, well done!
