Artists of the Week
Congratulations to the following recipients of KSC Artist of the Week who have all been nominated by Arts Teacher Ms Amy McLellan.
Thao Do 10B
My artwork was created using Global Acrylic Paints, and I used a range of water-colour brushes to produce smoother brush strokes.
I integrated a use of many brush techniques, such as dry brush and mixing the paint into water to reduce the opacity. As I was generating ideas prior to the painting, I wanted to create something that reflected my everyday life. For the majority my life, I have had a bad habit of doodling on objects such as furniture and schoolwork. The most common drawings you would find on my books would be people with animal features. With that in mind, I literally painted something that I’d typically draw absentmindedly on my school-work.
Amy McLellan: Thao has created an exceptionally expressive self-portrait that shows her immense technical skill in painting. Students in Year 10 Art explore acrylic painting techniques in creating their own major self-portrait artwork, they may be realistic or use symbolism to extend their artwork ideas and Thao has combined those approaches. Thao’s developmental visual diary work was of a very high standard and I am impressed with her ability to work so naturally in the medium. Well done Thao!
Blair Tink 10E
I researched other artworks and was inspired to create the background with a pallet knife with straight lines while not mixing the colours. I used symbolism to show my self-portrait in a painting, and to show that I have two sides to myself. One is outgoing and confident while the other is quiet and doesn’t like being around people.
Amy McLellan: Blair has created unique self-portrait that shows his skill and creativity in making artworks. Blair has used colour to highlight the different sides to himself.
He has created a really captivating image. Well done Blair!
Melody Zhan 10F
My concept of my ‘self-portrait’ is a reflection of shadow and sunshine. I drew the ‘tree’ to reflect sunshine, and I drew the leaves from the tree and the blue sky. Finally, I drew 'my face’ in detail. The colours in the centre compare the light background and let there be a sharp contrast. The tree from outside the Senior Centre represents Koonung Secondary College.
Amy McLellan: Melody has explored her own surroundings to create a technical sophisticated self portrait. Melody has used the autumn leaves in the senior yard as an inspiration for her own work. Melody has shown exceptional art skills throughout the semester. Well done Melody!

Food Technology
In Term 2 we looked at a design brief about the influence of different food trends and social factors on healthy eating in Australia. It was interesting to see how they impact our diets and everyday lives. Food trends such as super foods, skipping breakfast and snacking are all trends that are quite common in Australia. Education, location and income are social factors that also have an impact what Australians eat. We created three meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) for a hypothetical person and their families that were suited to their lifestyle and food intolerances. Afterwards, we evaluated our recipes to see how well they reflected the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and whether they were successful in meeting the design brief.
