Humanities 'First Peoples' Exhibition
For our first excursion in the Humanities, Year 7s explored the Melbourne Museum with a particular focus on the ‘First Peoples’ Exhibition. This concluded our study of Ancient Australia and opened our study of ‘Water in the World’. Here’s what students had to say about their experience:
‘It was really interesting going to the First People’s exhibit and it was great to have a good time to learn with my friends.’ Alex
‘My favourite part of the museum was feeding the birds. The birds were cute and shy but one came to me.’ Oliver
‘Bunjil the Eagle hypnotised me.’ Riley
‘I learnt so much about the First Peoples and also other things, like the history of Melbourne. I really enjoyed learning with my friends outside of school.’ Saskia
‘I really enjoyed exploring, discovering and interacting with the exhibits part of the First People’s exhibition. My favourite part was watching and listening to the mechanical eagle I loved the colours and movement. I learnt the the indigenous people believe the eagle created everything and the crow looks over everyone.’ Aimee
‘My favourite part of the day was the forest exhibition, because it was cool and there was a lake.’ Kelli
‘I liked learning about the possum skin cloaks and I enjoyed looking at the eels.’ Nikkita
‘I liked the interactive area and seeing the weapons and tools.’ Willem
‘The exhibition was truly inspiring. Learning was made full with all the interactive activities like the fire making task! My favourite part was watching a beautiful eagle made of plastic with some mesmerising projections.’ Aimee
‘I really enjoyed going to the museum for the first time and can’t wait to go again soon.’ Hady
Thank you for your reflections Year 7, and a huge thank you to our teachers who came along for the adventure: Theo, Chris, Sam, Mietta, Kat, Claire, Tom and Justin. What a brilliant day!
Clean Up Australia Day
As is becoming tradition, Year 9 students participated in Clean Up Australia Day today as part of Home Group. Focusing on Merri Creek, McDonald Reserve and around the Coburg Athletics Track and Basketball stadium, students collected over 40 bags of rubbish otherwise destined to pollute our waterways and environment. The students were a credit to themselves and the school, and we encourage everyone to keep up the good fight to keep our spaces clean!
Psychology
For the past few weeks the year 12 Psychology class have been studying the nervous system and its role in our everyday lives. We created a coat hanger mobile to illustrate what occurs when a threat (stressor) is perceived. Cortisol, a ‘stress hormone’, is released when a stressor has lasted for a long period of time. Cortisol enables us to deal with the stressor however it can cause wear and tear on the body, increasing our vulnerability to disease. In order to cope effectively with stress we encourage the community to engage in approach coping strategies such as meditation, relaxation, physical exercise, speak to a friend or family member “to get if off your chest” and seek advice from a councillor or psychologist. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

Year 10 Neuropsychology Excursion
On Tuesday the 13th of March the year 10 Neuropsychology class went on an excursion to the Melbourne Museum to visit ‘The Mind – enter the Labyrinth’ exhibition. They explored how the brain functions, psychological development, treatments, optical illusions and human emotions. After spending time exploring the mind exhibition, they got to have a look at the other exhibitions on offer at the museum, and 'A walk with the dinosaurs’ was a favourite.
