Grade 1

Reading

Our grade 1 students have continued focusing on phonemic awareness with our jolly phonic program, practising the sounds made from different letter blends and singletons to decode words in a variety of activities that include board games and book hunts. Sequencing has been the main comprehension strategy, with students identifying the order of events in different stories and real life situations and sorting or ordering them in the correct sequence.

Writing

The grade 1’s have finished their first genre of writing, recounts, which included recounts of weekends, treasure hunts and mystery bags . The three structural components students practised was the orientation (the 5 Ws - what, when, where, who and why), the order of events and the conclusion (their favourite part and their feelings). We have now transitioned into our next genre, narratives. Students have begun exploring different narratives such as fairytales and stories and the different features of narratives such as the characters, setting, complication and the resolution.

Maths

Students have focused on two area of maths over the last two weeks, place value and shape. Over the course of our place value focus, students have learnt about collections, larger and smaller numbers, 2 digit numbers, the place value of ones and tens and number lines. They have used a range of manipulatives and activities to explore place value such as hundreds chart hunts, building 2 digit numbers using unifix or icy pole sticks and placing items on different number lines. Our shape unit has encouraged students to learn about the different 2D and 3D shapes and their features such as how many sides, edges and vertices.

Integrated

Grade 1’s have continued focusing on different areas of human health, with our recent areas of learning in integrated being the human life cycle (the different stages of human life, baby, toddler, child, adolescent, adult and elderly), parts of the body (such as limbs and organs)  human emotions and social relationships that may impact on our emotions such as family and friendships.

Australian Football Clinic

Our students were lucky enough to have a local footy clinic visit our school and teach the fundamentals of Australian Football that included chest marks, overhead marks and kicking. Games, team building activities and beating personal scores were the main activities where students got to learn and get involved in Australian Rules Football.

Cross Country

Our amazing Physical Education Coordinator Mr Pike with the help of Grayling Staff, delivered another fantastic cross country! It was a searing hot day, but the students showed some awesome resolve and tackled the challenge of cross country head on, pushing their boundaries and representing their houses with PRIDE! Elsie and Fraser put in an amazing effort and were the first place finishers for the Grade 1 boys and girls races, but the overall effort from all of the students was an inspiring sight to see.

Kaboom Sports

A high octane event, super charged with high energy, the Kaboom sports event was jam packed with a wide variety of activities that required the students to work in pairs, groups and practice different gross motor skills. Constant movement and participation was the order of the day with our grade 1 students demonstrating our school values of PRIDE, as they always do!
