Tuesday March 15th was the day our School opened up to Year 6 students making decisions about their future education choices. Classrooms are on display, our students meet and greet prospective families and they get to see, just a taste of the work that continues year around within our classrooms. The Creative & Performing Arts faculty is set the task of displaying the work going on in Dance, Drama, Music, & Visual Arts in less than seven minutes. Why seven minutes? Due to the necessity of moving people through the school in an appropriate socially distanced manner, groups needed to tour in a prescribed circuit and within a time sequence in order to reduce contact.
This resulted in a whirl! One group arrived at the Music rooms and students went to work. The CAPA experience in seven minutes! Welcomed by the beautiful strains of Mia Droulias voice as she sang ‘Gravity’ we then enjoyed Gabby Favaloro’s rendition of an ABBA classic. The Percussion Ensemble, shook the room with a rousing rendition, which woke the world. Calming the room. Macy Nicholls from Year 11 performed a bridged version of a six minute monologue reflecting on parent/child relationships. Which all culminated, in the Year Nine Rock Band’s rendition of Five Seconds of Summer “Looks so Perfect”. Throughout the presentations the audience viewed the extraordinary beauty, grace and versatility of our dance students as recorded footage of dances performed for dance festivals over recent years were displayed. Between the performances, there were brief introductions to the Canterbury Creative staff and a brief glimpse into the possibilities for students participating in our rich extra-curricular program. Staff and students farewelled families with flyers of information as another group arrived through the door and the whirl went into action once more. The energy levels were high, the performances impressive and both staff and students enjoyed dancing to the whirl!

We are heading towards the end of the term, with lots of exciting projects coming up. We recently had our SRC Induction, where we officially welcomed our new Year 7s, and new SRC members across all years, as well as gave our new badges to our 4 leadership roles in our Year 11 group, with a new President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.
We also celebrated International Women’s Day, where the prefects held a bake sale, and we decorated the MPC and played live music, celebrating the theme for this year which was #breakthebias. International Women’s is an important celebration within our school community, celebrating the wonderful work the women in our community do.
Harmony day was also recently. We had live music playing in the quad, and we drew illustrations and words relating to the celebration of our different cultures. We were also able to wear an orange accessory, to show our celebration of diversity within our school! As we head into the school holidays, we are excited to start new projects next term! - Rose Dempsey Martin
Wednesday 16 March - The first day of Winter Sporty Gardeners. It was raining…again… so we bonded over Lego instead!
Wednesday 23 March – After all the recent rain we started weeding the Gayle Gibson Memorial Garden. We will look at planting flowers and neatening up the area over the next two Wednesdays.
The sporty part of the afternoon was about getting fit weaving through the slalom poles as we dropped the weeds off in the collection bag. After all, we are Sporty Gardeners.
Year 9 promoting physical activity by participating in a Tai Chi session
An initiative begun by our prefects, students and staff have been asked to submit book reviews to be shared in the newsletter.
Pulse Alive is a large-scale performing arts event, celebrating talented students from NSW public schools in Greater Sydney and beyond. It provides high quality opportunities in music, dance, visual arts and public speaking to students from all over the state. Originally scheduled for last year a group of students from Canterbury Girls finally managed to perform last month. You can see us in the right hand corner of the wide shot if you look closely! Let’s hear from Violeta who attended the event:
“I absolutely loved Pulse! It was a great experience to interact and make friends with people in other years, classes and schools. We had the chance to perform in a focused and professional manner, and I learnt a lot about singing in a mass choir. Pulse was really fun. I loved spending time together with my friends and making new ones through singing. Viewing the other performances was incredible and inspiring. Can’t wait to do it again next year!”
Maths Clinic is on every Thursday and Friday during lunchtimes in A11. All students are welcome. Maths teachers are available to help during this time.
