Sculpture by the Sea

Over the last five or six years we, as a school, have enjoyed a partnership with Sculptures by the Sea as one of their  five schools chosen to be part of their Outreach Schools Program. The program offers us free artist led sculpture making workshops conducted at the school towards the end of the year. As a teacher I value these workshops as it encourages the students to look beyond drawing and painting as art and encourages them to explore their creativity. The workshops are based on what the artist has exhibited at Sculptures by the Sea held each year at Cottesloe Beach.

Last year we had Denise Pepper come to our class and  we created sculptures from a weaving technique Denise uses in her artwork. Usually I would take my students to see the exhibition and participate in an artist led workshop at the beach but sadly was unable to do so this year due to Covid. We were able however to book a virtual artist workshop  which we did with artist Mikaela Castledine.  She showed the students how to use found objects (sticks) to create animals. Echidnas and Kookaburras both took part in the workshop and all of the students thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Here are some of the students along with Mikaela and their creations.  Aren't they fantastic?
