Numeracy

Spotlight on Numeracy

Each fortnight a different grade will be in the SPOTLIGHT sharing numeracy inside the classrooms!

Welcome to Numeracy in Year Six

In the last couple of weeks, Year Six’s focus has been on Numeracy. We have been learning about key mathematical areas such as multiplication and division, addition and subtraction, and patterns and algebra.

PATTERNS AND ALGEBRA

In algebra, we are learning about replacing numbers with letters and finding the rule that refers to the relationship of the order of the number, and the number of items.

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

In addition and subtraction, we have been learning about what algorithms to use for what function.

MULTIPLICATION  AND DIVISION

In multiplication and division, we have been learning how to do short division and multiplication algorithms.

Maths Olympiad

This week, Newman Maths class participated in the Maths Olympiad. The Maths Olympiad is a series of tests designed to challenge students with difficult problems for them to solve. We are very proud that we have been able to participate in this excellent initiative and opportunity that OLF provides us.

This week, our class participated in a Maths Olympiad. This is a competition where we try to challenge our minds into thinking outside of the box. We were presented with five questions, each with its own level of difficulty. Each of these questions presents us with a different mathematical problem to solve. We all agree that we enjoy learning at a higher level and challenging ourselves out of our comfort zone. We enjoy it much more when our minds are being challenged which is why we have things like this at our school. - Ally & Jess

What do you love about Maths?

“What I love about the maths we have been learning this year is that there is a different challenge every day and exciting new topics every fortnight- Georgia”

“I love maths because our streamed classes allow us to be further extended or supported- Olivia.”

“I love our maths lessons because the teachers alter the lessons to make it more enjoyable and interesting for the students- Poppy”

“I love maths because there is always an answer- Jess.”

In Maths class, I enjoy doing all the large number addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We learn about other areas of Maths such as, chance, measurement, geometry and data. We do Maths Olympiad which is five questions long but the questions are only for Newman Maths and other schools participate. Austin

This week in Year 6 Mathematics we have been learning about short division with remainders, patterns and algebra, and multiplication.
Here at OLF, we have interactive learning in our Maths lessons that includes a variety of different resources, for example in younger grades they have learning games and resources but here in Year Six, we like to use our whiteboards, our Promethean Screen (Smartboard Screen), Mathematics Books and interactive online mathematics games.

As a diverse school, our mathematics is incredibly flexible to suit each student’s needs. We learn new topics each week or fortnightly to become skilled at each type of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division etc.
Our favourite thing about Mathematics at OLF is completing launch tasks about four times a week to help us succeed and build our skills. Launch tasks are a  fun and inquisitive way of doing Mathematics by writing down the goal of the lesson and then completing the simple steps. This help us learn a new skill and solve mathematical problems!
At Our Lady of Fatima we love out of the box learning! The things that make us think!

What do we enjoy?

At OLF, we enjoy the challenge that we get assigned to do and we like competing in Maths Olympiad to achieve great goals and to help us later on in life when we need mathematical problem solving skills. Maths Olympiad is a competition where you compete against different schools in a test to prove how good you are at Maths. In this test you need to problem solve, read carefully and concentrate to do your best. This is why we love Maths at OLF

What have we learnt?

In Maths at OLF we have learnt many different strategies and techniques including the split strategy, the jump strategy, inverse operations to check work and more. We have learnt these strategies by listening to the teacher, trying hard and not saying this is too hard. These are the things we have learnt.
