From the Director of Students

Mr Baldino Vetrano

Dear College Community,

It has been a fitting end to a very busy Term 3. As we farewell our Year 12 students, I remember when they first started their journey at St Gregory’s as young Year 7 boys. The growth and development of these Year 12 students is just extraordinary.

Just as extraordinary are the relationships that have formed between our Year 12 students and staff over many years. I am confident that our Year 12 students truly understand the commitment and dedication that staff have displayed over the years in supporting the graduating class of 2020.

I wish all the boys my best wishes and good luck during their HSC exams.

RU OK? DAY

The College is extremely proud of how students came together last week in harmony and support. A very special thank you to all staff and students who made the RU OK? Day movement extra special this year. The College hopes that all students continue open and meaningful conversations about mental health and that all students and staff feel comfortable to ‘start a conversation’ about wellbeing.

To get a better idea of how students participated, please visit the St Greg’s Facebook page to view the RU OK? Day clip.

Start of Term 4

As we move into the warmer weather I would like to highlight and remind students of the importance of wearing the College uniform with pride. In Term 4 students are to wear their summer uniform. This means the possibility of wearing the grey College shorts and long socks, another reminder that the socks always need to be pulled up and shirts need to be tucked in.

The College Hair policy was altered this year, again I ask that parents and students understand the changes and conform to the new policy.

Boys to Men: Maggie Dent: Helping teenage boys grow into good men.

Finally, I would like to give parents the opportunity to listen to a very informative podcast that featured on ABC radio.

Maggie Dent grew up in the country and she always felt she 'spoke bloke'.

As a high school teacher and a family counsellor, she discovered she had a real affinity for teenage boys, and understood how to communicate with them. It helped that she was also the mother of four sons. In her conversations with parents she often found they were bewildered by their teenage sons. They said it was as though an alien had landed in their family and their sweet boy had been replaced by an unpredictable and sometimes monosyllabic human. But Maggie says we often don't realise how vulnerable teenage boys are as they grow into adulthood.

She believes if parents learn about some of the ways the brain changes during adolescence, it can make for much better ways to communicate.
