Assessment in Mathematics

To begin Term 4, St Edward’s School welcomed Mrs Tracey Hughes-Butters and Mrs Trish Mitchell from the Catholic Schools Office to continue our staff Professional Development related to the MaST Project and the Great Mathematics Lesson. The focus of this session was on how we, as teachers, can ensure that we are using effective and efficient tools and strategies to assess our students in Mathematics.

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) states that assessment:

  • provides opportunities for teachers to gather evidence about student achievement in relation to syllabus outcomes;
  • enables students to demonstrate what they know and can do;
  • clarifies student understanding of concepts and promotes deeper understanding;
  • provides evidence that current understanding and skills are a suitable basis for future learning.

Staff worked collaboratively to discuss how best to utilise the three components of assessment: Assessment For Learning, Assessment As Learning and Assessment Of Learning in their classrooms. Strategies and examples of each assessment type were also explored ready for the staff to try out with the students in their class this term.
