Meet our Music Tutors

Dorothy Lincoln

Devon Robson - Guitar

Devon Robson is a multi-skilled guitarist based in Hobart, Australia.  He is an experienced musician having performed in ensembles ranging from Jazz through to contemporary music groups, percussion guitar, and bands. Devon has performed across Australia in numerous bands and stage productions.

In addition to Mount Carmel College, Devon teaches at The Friends School, Southern Music and privately at his home studio in Forcett.

Devon believes you need two elements to be a good musician and achieve your true musical voice: Technique - this is the “mechanics” of playing the guitar. i.e. moving fingers, picking etc. and secondly Deeper Dimension - this is your ‘unique musical voice’ and ‘passion (enjoyment)’.

The goal is for the student to be able to play so that the music effortlessly and seamlessly flows which is achieved by experimenting with the developed ‘mechanics’ and ‘unique musical voice’. A student will need to develop their Technique to achieve this to make the magic happen: that is where the experimentation and learning comes in to play.

Debbie Chung - Piano

Debbie Chung has been teaching how to play the piano at Mount Carmel since 2010. She teaches piano so people of all ages can enjoy music. Her teaching is underpinned by important educational principles.

Learning an instrument is a skill that uses many parts of the brain so that learning subjects like maths, reading and science are easier to understand.

Playing an instrument for several years boosts brain power even more! It can also help you to relax, make you happy and very importantly, make you feel awesome.

Debbie's five children all learned violin and piano and when they return home, they head straight for the piano which, as their teacher, fills her heart with joy!

After singing for many years with the Tas University Music Society (TUMS), the Tas Conservatorium Chorale and St Mary's Cathedral Choir, Debbie now accompanies the singing at the Vigil Mass at St Mary's on Saturday evenings. She also enjoys gardening (when it's warm), bushcare, cooking, giving things a new lease of life at the Community/Mens' Shed and volunteering at her local Primary school.

Craig Russell - Trombone

Craig Russell is the Trombone teacher at Mount Carmel.  He is an experienced musician and dedicated teacher, who has been teaching at St Virgil's Junior school for many years and has supported the Secondary Music program by teaching trombone in the classroom in addition to teaching students individually.

He currently has vacancies for anyone who would like to learn the trombone.
