PhoenIX Bystander Training

Over the past 6 weeks, Mel from the Big Life Team and our School Nurse, Nikki McCarthy have delivered a Bystander Training session to all year 9 PhoenIX classes via Google Meets.

The aim was to increase students’ confidence to intervene when they see, hear, or have knowledge of an incident that could be hurtful or harmful to someone involved.

We spoke about how all of us can be leaders when it comes to being an upstander, and how we don’t have to be loud, aggressive or put ourselves in danger in order to step in when we know someone is being treated unfairly.

78% of students reported they would feel more confident being an upstander after the session.

“I think it was a really great lesson about learning more on racism and techniques on how to deal with it effectively”

An interesting challenge set for VCAL students recently required a lot of effort and was an effective way of practising persistence

The goal was to balance an egg on its end!!

This activity certainly leads to frustration, which can be worked through by using positive self-talk and a growth mindset to try, and try again. This could be a fun holiday family challenge! Click on the image at right for more details and wellbeing ideas.
