Michaelmas House News

It has been a very busy few weeks so far this term with many students training and playing sport, often some training or playing two games on the same afternoon. The days have seemed quite short, cold and somewhat wet and yet it is pleasing to see so many braving the conditions for the enjoyment of their chosen sport.

Year Nine Parent Luncheon

On the last Friday of Term Two, Michaelmas House hosted a luncheon for the parents of the current Year Nine girls.  The intention was to come together, and for some, having met each other for the first time, being able to put a face to a name of the girls.  We also farewelled our Gap Assistant Lea, as she was leaving Great Southern Grammar after twelve months and heading home to Germany.

Boarding's Got Talent

Michaelmas Year Nine leaders Brianna Harris and Eliza Sprigg are coming up with ideas to present and discuss with everyone in the House for the upcoming Boarding's Got Talent quest where all the boarding houses compete against each other for the mighty BGT cup!  Michaelmas House host this event annually which will be held in Week Nine on Sunday 20 September. Some students are hesitant initially, however in no time at all, once they are involved they have fun and create wonderful entertainment for all. We will include some photos in the Boarding Buzz at the end of the term.

Birthdays

We have celebrated a few birthdays this term.  Happy birthday to Natalie Heron, Rhiannon Williams-Jolley, Rosie Page and Eliza Sprigg.

May the sun shine and the rain fall where and when it is needed!

Rain

On Tuesday 4 October, Albany had 81 millimetres of rain! The rugby oval behind the boarding house was flooded; so, the Year Seven Michaelmas boys and some of the girls from Endeavour made the most of it by going swimming (well, sort of) after school and then again, the next day. The water was absolutely freezing, but we had a lot of fun and I would certainly do it again. Unfortunately, not all the farmers got this rain, but the ones that did loved it and so did the crops!

Shoe Rack

Last Wednesday we took advantage of having a bye in our hockey fixture. Hayden Leo, Austin Brown, Tom Hams, Ryan Hams and I joined Mr Colgate in the Design Technology workshop after school to construct a Michaelmas communal shoe/boot rack for our house. The rack is to hold wet shoes, so we can place them in front of the heater to dry. Mr Colgate had already done some of the prep work in advance and our task was to complete the project. Some of the processes we experienced included shaping, drilling, trenching, sanding, routering and jig sawing. The machines we used included the drum sander, router, jigsaw, pedestal drill and battery drills. Once all components were completed, we worked as a team to coordinate the final assembly. We were pleased with the overall result and satisfied we all contributed to this useful item. Thank you Mr Colgate for helping us make this project.

Baudin Fundraiser

Last Thursday, Baudin had a fundraiser for breast cancer where everyone was asked to wear something pink.  I am sure everyone had a very fun time. We hall had to bring a gold coin donation and some money for some treats at recess.  It was a lovely day as it was nice and sunny, which was quite surprising.

Hopefully we raised enough money to help the breast cancer fundraiser.
