Alumni Program

On Tuesday the 25th of August, from the comfort of their homes, 32 Arts students, two teachers and the MGC alumni program coordinator were joined by 2007 alum, Isabella Giovinazzo, for a lunchtime Q & A career pathway session.  The Arts Captains, Abi Williams, Beatrice James, Chloe Johnstone and Lily Hopkinson wanted to offer an alumni career pathway session to students with an interest in the arts.  Teachers Anne Corry and Lindy Mumme introduced the captains to Lori Perry, MGC Ourschool Alumni Program Coordinator, and together they planned and executed the informational and entertaining session.

Isabella Giovinazzo may best be known for her role as Phoebe Nicholson in the second longest-running drama series on Australian television, Home and Away, but on Tuesday her role was that of an older sister to the MGC students who joined the session.  Isabella shared advice about tertiary education, the importance of hard work, following your interests and taking care of yourself along the way. She answered questions, shared experiences about the life of a young filmmaker and even told a “funny” story about how she single handedly doused the fun of muck up day for MGC students in the early 2000’s.

Year 12 student Amelia Simeone had this reaction after the session: “Isabella was amazing to listen to and so inspiring – she seems like such a down to earth and wonderful person.”

We may have another successful actor alum or two in the years to come, as Isabella has offered an opportunity for interested students to send in audition tapes for a part in a short film she has written and will soon be working on.  Break a leg, girls!

Melbourne Girls’ College joined the Ourschool Alumni Program Foundation Service beginning this school year.  Ourschool is a not for profit service dedicated to helping public high schools establish and build their alumni networks to benefit students and strengthen public school communities.

If you are or know an alum who would like to share her post-MGC pathway with the alumni coordinator, email alumni@mgc.vic.edu.au

MGC alumnae have a wealth of knowledge, and many have shared their experiences with students who are soon to embark on a post MGC pathway of their own.  This connection benefits all who participate: teachers see the fruits of their labour, alumnae feel the satisfaction of giving back and students learn firsthand from relevant role models.
