WHAT CAREER IS THAT?

Born to Engineer

"Being an engineer doesn’t just encompass one job. In fact, engineering is a large family of careers. Whilst all engineering careers share a number of core general skills, they quickly branch out into different specialisms that require very different skillsets."

You can choose from a variety of areas including:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Electric and Electronic Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Other engineering specialisations
    • Geological Engineering
    • Marine Engineering
    • Nuclear Engineering
    • Petroleum Engineering
    • Engineering Management

To find out what some of these roles entail you can visit the borntoengineer website. This is a UK site but full of helpful information. Also check out the GIST website for excellent videos and resources for women in STEM.

FEATURED REPORTS

100 Jobs of the Future

"Writing on work futures is generally in agreement about the major drivers of change, including technological change — artificial intelligence, robots and big data, as well as innovation in materials, propulsion and energy strategies, climate change, globalisation, population pressures and changed demographic profiles. The implications for jobs are more vague, and futurists spread along a continuum stretching from predictions of dystopian futures to optimistic predictions of a better life for all."

What will future work look like for you?

What are Australia's current 20 most needed jobs?

"The job market has been through big upheavals in 2020 – and that’s impacted which industries have the most demand for new workers. Huge pressure on the healthcare system and a growth in parcel delivery during COVID-19 are two key factors shaping the most-needed roles in Australia right now.

Here’s a snapshot of the top 20 most-needed roles, plus what employers in these industries will be looking for in applications."

Emerging Occupations

"The National Skills Commission (NSC) has developed a data-driven approach to identify emerging occupations within Australia.  By identifying emerging skills and looking at how these skills change existing jobs, we are able to identify emerging or new jobs in the labour market. New occupations often emerge as a result of the need to adapt and learn new skills.  The current COVID-19 crisis has seen situations such as manufacturers having to learn new techniques to make unfamiliar, in demand products, and restaurant owners having to quickly developed or enhanced their skills in e‑commerce, for example."

The diagram below illustrates some emerging occupations. Students are encouraged to browse the National Skills Commission website and learn more about emerging occupations.
