Reading is a core part of “living well and learning well” at McCarthy

Building on the Year 7 and 8 students’ targeted reading program, several Mentor groups are visiting  the library during each week. Houses such as Assisi and Mackillop are coming to the library during Mentor Group. It is  a great time for their Year 7-12 students to combine to select, read and borrow  books.  It is wonderful to see our library alive at the beginning of the day with students of all year levels reading together.

Read Grow Inspire 2023- Children’s Book Council Awards.

This Term we are promoting the Children’s Book Council (CBCA) shortlist books we have in our library. Illustrator Matt Oatley is the chosen artist for this year’s CBCA awards.  We have many of his works in our library.  Library Bookstand photo Matt Oatley

His CBCA artwork inspires students to read as a way to help with growth.  His artwork of a seahorse, balancing on books in the clouds, challenges everyone to create their own list of words for every letter of the alphabet to show how they feel, what they understand, and all they learn through climbing a book tower into the wide universe symbolised by the sky and clouds.

Guessing competition winner!

Recently, we ran our “Hop into Reading” reading promotion with a guessing competition.  Congratulations to Year 8 student Ruby Eason whose estimate of 435 chocolate treats in the containers was closest to the official count of 434. To participate, students came into the library and then recorded their estimate at the library counter. Thank you to all students who participated.

The Library team is looking forward to working and supporting our students in reaching their individual reading for enjoyment and academic goals this term.  If a student needs help in meeting their goals we encourage them to come and speak to one of the library team.
