Hello Year 3 Families,

We hope you had a lovely school holiday and got a chance to rest and relax. It was wonderful to see all our student’s smiling faces on the first day of this term, we really did miss them! All students had a really positive end to Term 1 (we loved ending the term in our pyjamas) and we are excited for all the great learning that is going to happen this term.

Literacy

In Reading students enjoyed the mentor text Stuck and were challenged to summarise the main events of the story and recall all the things that happened in the story. We also went on an adventure through the book Journey. This was a special book for the students as it has no words and students were challenged to use their inferring skills to comprehend the text. We have continued to work on expanding our vocabulary as well as learning about different prefixes and suffixes and how and when to use them.

During Writing, we learnt about how to write a really detailed procedural text. We started off the unit by challenging the students to write us a procedure on how to make a vegemite sandwich. We then followed students' instructions to make a real vegemite sandwich and we learnt the importance of being really descriptive. As the unit went on, students showed their understanding of procedural writing and wrote some excellent procedures on inventions they had created, magic potions and how to make ANZAC biscuits.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we focused on different subtraction strategies as well as learning the connection between addition and subtraction. Students solved word problems, created number patterns and played some hands on maths games to practise these skills. We also continued our unit on time and have exposed students to telling time to the minute and why it is important.

In History, we completed a mini unit on ANZAC Day. Students read a variety of stories, and watched interesting videos about ANZAC Day and why it is important. We also learnt about the different symbols that represent the ANZACs and how they came to be. A highlight of this unit was making ANZAC biscuits. Students enjoyed the process and eating the delicious cookies.

Towards the end of the term, we also celebrated Harmony Day. This was a wonderful day where we got to learn more about each other's cultures. Students were eager to hear from their peers and learnt about where their families came from, celebrations they participate in, as well as the different foods they eat. It was fantastic to see so many students wearing clothes that represent their culture.
