Hello Year 1 families and welcome to Term 2!

The Year 1 teachers hope that the students enjoyed their holidays. We hope that the families who celebrated Easter and Eid enjoyed quality time with their loved ones.

We have many exciting things coming up in Term 2 and below is a brief outline of some of the topics we will be learning about in classrooms.

Literacy

In Literacy, we are beginning the transition from separated Reading and Writing lessons to a two-hour literacy block. This will look like many mini-lessons within the two-hours, including phonemic awareness (rhyming, syllables, phonemes), Little Learners Love Literacy, oral language, handwriting, writing and comprehension strategies.

We will be continuing on with our Little Learners Love Literacy program where students will be exposed to new graphemes using their knowledge of phonemes.

In Writing, students will be taught different forms of punctuation and will use this to then write correctly structured sentences and short stories.

Numeracy

This term, students will have three lessons that are Number and Algebra focused and two lessons that are Measurement and Geometry and Statistic and Probability focused. In the first 3 weeks, students will be taught numerous strategies on how to solve addition and subtraction sums and how to measure and compare the lengths, masses and capacities of pairs of objects using uniform informal units.

History

This term we will be learning about History! In Week 1, we will be diving deep into understanding our own families and how we were raised. We will be exploring the people, places and objects that have special meanings to each student and what they symbolise. In preparation for this unit of learning, the Year 1 students have collaboratively created an ANZAC wreath for our first assembly of the term. We will also be learning about the ANZACs and why Australia has a national day of commemoration. This is our wreath below!
