Bookizz
What do you get if you mix a book and a quiz together? You get BOOKIZZ! Our recent addition to reading groups. In pairs, students read a book, develop four questions and create a slide each to challenge their peers on their comprehension skills. We love quizzes, bring it on!
Maths Challenge 2023
Open for business on Thursday and Friday mornings. Students take a number and work together in pairs to formulate an equation using the digits from the year ‘2023’. Watch out because if the equation is discovered to be incorrect then students must give up their number. Checking and rechecking the equation is the best way to safely keep a number. Students are engaging in order of operations, square numbers, powers, and factorials – it’s so much fun!
Author @ Work
Back by popular demand is the Author @ Work writing experience. Room 5 and Room 6 students partner up and interview each other using open questions to find out more about each other. They then use this information to create a story about their partner. Audience engagement is key here as students will be reading and assessing a story written exclusively for them. We use the 6 Thinking Hats to help us improve our story writing.
We have had a busy start to Term 2 in Room 7. In English, we are examining book reviews and the features of writing an effective book review. We started off our unit by creating our own book reviews of a book we read over the holidays! In Health, we’ve been learning about protective behaviours and have enjoyed our class discussions on safe vs unsafe scenarios. In Maths, we’ve been exploring the different ways in which we can multiply larger numbers. These include the split & multiply strategy, the box method strategy, and the lattice method of multiplication.
In HASS and Digital Technologies with Miss Turvey, we’ve been learning about the impact of bushfires and floods. We explored Mt Resilience which is an augmented reality app on how to prevent and respond to these extreme weather events. We then designed fire-resistant houses on Minecraft and have had so much fun creating and filming our own BTN style news reports, using the Green Screens. In Week 3 we are going to Fremantle Prison for an excursion, and we can not wait!
In Term 1, Year 4 students from Room 11 attended an excursion at the Canning River Eco Centre. They learnt about Noongar connection to the country, culture, and history. They had fun getting hands on making fishing nets using natural resources from around the beautiful Canning River.
Year 5s have been learning about bushfires in Geography. They worked together on research about bushfires in Australia and created a news report using green screen technology on their iPads. The videos used their research to inform viewers about the causes, impacts, and prevention of bushfires in Australia. Year 4s were also involved in making a news report about their experiences at the Canning River Eco Centre.
In English, we have been working on expanding our vocabulary to use more sophisticated words in our writing. Students worked in teams to develop synonyms, antonyms and sentences using these words to build their understanding.
In Digital Technology, we have been working on our coding skills in Scratch and are working towards designing and developing a game this term.
