Resource Centre

If you stopped by and visited the Marian College Resource Centre, it would be difficult to predict everything you might see and experience. You will observe students from all year levels browsing and finding books to review or borrow, conversations about new books that have been added to the collection, students studying or a class collaborating on a research task. The uniqueness of the space is that it serves the needs of so many people.

Some of the activities that have occurred recently in the Resource Centre include the debating teams collaborating with Mr Milana, visiting author Alice Phung, who spoke to students about her experiences and inspirations of writing.

This week saw the launch of two creative writing competitions that encourage students from all year levels to bring their creative thoughts to life. Student participation in these competitions will take place over the next two months and we look forward to collaborating with all year levels to prepare their stories for submission.

The Deakin University National Reading Survey will be conducted over the next two weeks. The survey is completed anonymously and aims to provide an insight into the reading identity, choices and habits of young people throughout Australia in the digital age.

The valuable data obtained from the survey aims to provide an insight into the way that developments in technology have shaped and will continue to shape the evolution of young peoples’ reading habits and literacy skills. The information derived from the Australia wide survey may also identify other areas that may assist the Resource Centre to review how we serve our patrons better.

As the trees become dormant with the onset of Autumn and the colour of each leaf changes before it drops to the ground, the Year 7 Students took their reading time outdoors to enable them to get away from their desks and usual learning environment. I enjoyed sharing the space with the students, some were reading quietly and others were reading to each other. It was fantastic to hear the conversations between the students about their reading choices.

As we approach the end of Term One, we would like to thank the Marian College Community for supporting the Resource Centre and what it does through its operations to support the learning and growth of our young people. May peace and relaxation be a part of your Easter.
