Allergy Management at Magill School

Australia has the highest incidence of food allergy in the world!

An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system reacts to substances in the environment that are harmless to most people.  Anaphylaxis is a potentially life threatening, severe allergic reaction.

Magill School acknowledges that due to current food processing practices, it is impractical to eliminate all allergens entirely from an environment where there is food. It is assumed that any product may have traces of nut or other food allergy ingredients unless confirmed otherwise.

The emphasis is therefore on raising awareness, adopting reasonable procedures and risk minimisation strategies, encouraging self-responsibility and considering students with allergies when planning activities.  Our Allergy Awareness Policy documents the way we do this, along with student and parent/caregiver responsibilities and can be found on the school website:

The administration of adrenaline (epinephrine) is the first line of treatment for anaphylaxis. Students who have been diagnosed with severe allergies/anaphylaxis should provide a relevant health care plan (ASCIA red plan – Action Plan for Anaphylaxis) and an Adrenaline Auto-injector (Epipen / Anapen) and if applicable, other medication stated by their treating health professional.  The school also holds an Epipen for general use.  Please see the Department for Education’s Information Sheet for Families below for further information.   Students who have mild allergies should provide an ASCIA green plan – Action Plan for Allergic Reactions and medication as listed by the treating health professional.

Please let the school know as soon as your child develops an allergy whether you have a plan in place or not.

Information and support are also available from the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (ASCIA) https://www.allergy.org.au/ and from Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia https://allergyfacts.org.au/

First Aid SMS

If your child visits the first aid room, both parents will be sent an SMS giving brief details of the nature of the visit and the action taken.  If your child sustains an injury that requires more than first aid or is unwell and needs to be collected from school, we will telephone you.  Please ensure that all contact details are up to date.
