Women in STEAM Morning Tea at Casey Tech

This year, we had the opportunity to celebrate women in STEM jobs. This year’s theme is Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender equal future #EmbraceEquity, The morning consisted of presentations by two speakers, Sonya Casey from AI Group and Kiowa Scott-Hurley from Defence Science and Technology Group, followed by morning tea and an opportunity to chat with some female industry leaders who also joined us for the student activities. At the end of morning tea, the students were split into four groups and participated in a range of 45-minute activities. Our students participated in a great mathematical activity where they represented the Fibonacci numbers visually.

The Year 10 Century of Change students visited the Holocaust Museum. Students profited from their discussions with survivor Paul Grinwald who shared his experience of being a child in occupied France. They helped Paul celebrate his 90th birthday and warmly responded to his powerful message of tolerance and respect.

Year 11 Psychology DAX Centre excursion

The Year 11 Psychology classes visited the DAX Centre. The DAX Centre works with artists who have lived experience of mental health issues. We were given a guided tour of the current exhibition and a presentation by a mental health advocate of their personal lived experience with a mental health issue. This expanded our understanding of mental health issues and help break down stigma.

Year 12 Physics at Luna Park

Year 12 Physics class went to Luna Park for part of the Unit 3 Area of Study titled ‘How fast can things go?’

Students were required to analyse the motion of the various rides on offer and apply the theory covered in class to solve problems involving real world scenarios. The workbook completed on the day contributed to students receiving a satisfactory outcome of this area of study.

Space Discovery Dome Incursion

Year 9 Mission 2050 and Year 10 Space and Earth classes had the opportunity to experience space in a planetarium-style manner. Year 9’s explored the solar system, and the requirements planets need to sustain life, while the Year 10’s explored the Big Bang Theory.

Visual Arts

Year 12 students currently studying Art Creative Practice, Art Making and Exhibiting and Visual Communication Design visited the NGV International. The purpose of this excursion was to visit the exhibition by internationally renowned fashion designer, Alexander McQueen. We arrived an hour early and were able to spend that time exploring the gallery. A wonderful bonus, especially for the students who had never visited the gallery before. Students were then lucky enough to be given an intro talk by Amy from the NGV. This was a fascinating and entertaining insight into McQueen’s work and artistic journey.

We were all excited to have our chance to view the exhibition. Our students were overwhelmed, greatly motivated and inspired by what they saw. Students enjoyed a wonderful lunch and received an Alexander McQueen visual diary.

Overall, this was a valuable and inspirational experience for our senior students. We received much positive feedback from the students who attended the excursion.
