Grade 5 Home Learning Snapshot - Term 3/Week 5

Writing

Students will continue to focus on Organisation from the 6+1 Traits of Writing. This week they will focus on the structure and language features of an Information Report. They will use graphic organisers to recognise the order of different types of information reports. Then they will look at the specific language features and techniques used in the introduction of an information report. Students will continue to link this to The Stages of the Writing Process.

Reading

Students need to continue reading daily as part of their tasks and also at night for their homework. If your child needs some inspiration for reading, here are some authors or books that might be of interest.

This week students will continue their focus on the comprehension strategy of summarising. They will continue to learn different strategies that will help them summarise and find the main idea of non- fiction texts. Students will continue to use a variety of texts and videos in reading that will help them inquire into the central idea ‘People stand up for rights to create change’.

Students should also be encouraged to continue working on their fluency by reading out loud for part of their independent reading - whether they call a friend and read to them or read to family members or even pets!

Maths

Next week students will continue to consolidate their learning of the fraction concepts taught so far this term. It is important to provide the students with continual opportunities to practise what they have learnt. The students will also learn how to solve fraction equations using the operations (+ - x /) and apply this to visual examples such as number lines and other fraction models. Students will also learn about terms such as improper fractions, mixed fractions and using the four operations to solve fraction equations with unlike denominators. To further support students and parents at home, answer pages to closed questions will be sent out to your child’s Google Classroom account at the end of the applicable day.

Unit of Inquiry

This week in inquiry we are continuing our investigation into ‘Where We Are in Time and Place’ - which students have been documenting on their Learning Journal Wall. It has been very rewarding watching students’ Learning Journal Wall grow and develop. Building on students’ growing understanding of how differing perspectives can change our view of the world and in turn influence and motivate our thinking, feelings, behaviour and actions we move onto the ‘Movers and Shakers’ of Australian history and social change. This week students will begin their research of an important Australian who has led and created change in our society.

Word Study

Students will continue to practise 30 "codes" of the English language through watching videos uploaded by their class teacher. They will also continue to explore a reading or spelling rule which will help them when they decode or write words. There are 30 rules that students will gradually explore through their primary schooling.

This week students will learn and  "bootcamp" Rule 30. This is where the students practise the new skill until it becomes "automatic" in their brains.

Wellbeing

The ability to self-regulate is a skill which is important to all of us especially in our current situation. We all come across situations that test us from time to time. When we are able to recognise our feelings we are able to do something about them and get ourselves to a healthy place. An important area of emphasis this week will be decatastrophising as students ask themselves, “How BIG is my problem?
