Term 3, Week 5
Home Learning
Home Learning
Thank you for another great week of Remote Learning. The students are working hard and submitting work to a good standard. As always, please read through all the information included in this weekly Newsletter as well as the Compass Newsfeed, as it contains more specific information about Home Learning. We will also share this information through posts on the Grade 6 Cohort Google Classroom.
We thank you for your continued support and please don't hesitate to contact us via compass with any questions or queries.
GOOGLE MEET SESSIONS:
NOTE: It is a requirement for all students to attend their Google Meet sessions each day.
Information about your child's Google Meet sessions will be posted on their individual class Google Classrooms. This term we will be running more small group Google Meet sessions. It is an expectation that your child attends their sessions each week.
English
Reading
Grade 6 will be continuing to summarise texts. This week we be studying common text structures. Explicitly teaching students about these common textual features will help them to better understand how to interpret and assess information in a range of texts.
Writing
We are continuing our unit on ‘The Writing Process’. This unit will take students through the process of planning, drafting, revising, and polishing a narrative piece. This week we will move into workshop mode, followed by independent writing time. Students will look at how writers use different techniques to create a story. Most writers use five different methods/modes for telling stories, these include narration, description, dialogue, interior monologue, and exposition. Usually, all five of these modes are used in the same story, all mixed up together. Students will begin using all five modes to ensure they have a balanced text.
Mathematics
We will continue with our focus on Fractions and Decimals. This week, the students will be looking at converting between Decimals, Fractions and Percentages. The students will then use their knowledge to complete a range of problem solving/worded tasks. Included in the slides are some extension tasks and early finisher tasks. The students should be working through their My Numeracy goals, as well as using Mathletics and Prodigy if they have time.
Unit of Inquiry
This week students will continue to research the documentary film 2040. Students will create a brainstorm that answers the question , what are some of the big challenges for our future?
Students will research several action based websites provided on the slides and answer questions. Students will be conducting interviews across the grade 6 cohort and Completing, What could transport look like in the future? document.

Contact
We encourage and celebrate student voice in Grade 6. If students have any concerns or questions, they can comment or post on either the whole cohort or individual class Google Classrooms. Teachers receive notifications when students post and will respond when possible. Students should also communicate questions and ideas relating to learning with each other using the two Google Classrooms. This will keep them connected and allow them to see each other's progress.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email your child’s teacher through compass.
Reminders
Children must have Google Classroom notifications turned on to ensure they are receiving communications from their classroom teacher and their peers. It would be useful if students checked the Google Classroom each day, both in the morning and again in the afternoon, to see if new information or tasks have been added.
Specialist Team
The Specialist team will be organising tasks for the students and sharing this with students. Please contact Mrs Travis or Mrs Goosey if you have any questions.
Hearing Unit
Parents of Hearing Unit students, please continue to refer to your child’s weekly HU program. Please contact your child’s Teacher of the Deaf with any queries.
