Term 3 Week 3

English

Reading

This week in Reading we will be working with the picture story book "What If- A book about recycling" by Mick Manning and Brita Granstrom. Students will be completing a 'Literacy Menu' throughout the week with different tasks relating to the book. The literacy menu tasks focus on the skills of predicting, making connections and summarising. In their Reading Groups this week, each group will be reading a text presented to them on Google Meet and answering a range of questions. The focus skill for these Guided Reading sessions is making connections between themselves and the text.

Writing

The students will continue learning about the writing process. Over the last week, students focused on the drafting stage and developing their ideas as either a procedural, information persuasive, or explanation text. This week we will look at the stage of revising. This part of the process looks at how we can improve our writing and asking questions of ourselves like:

Are my details clear?

Should I add or take out parts?

Have I used the best ideas or words?

Is my writing in a sensible order?

It is important to note that this stage does not involve fixing punctuation or spelling. That will come in the editing stage.

Word Study

It's been great to see the students working hard to learn the codes and we have enjoyed hearing them record themselves each Friday. Next week we will be continuing the codes as well as introducing the students to 'The Gangsters'. The gangsters are a set of codes that can make a vowel say a whole new sound. This week the students will meet THeo (th), Mario (m), Nicko (n) and Vincenzo (v) who sometimes follow the letter 'o' in words and make it say an /u/ sound. For example, brother, some, done and dove. We hope you all enjoy the short video created by the Grade 3 teachers.

Mathematics

Number and Algebra

This week we are starting a new unit on multiplication. Students will be completing the online pre-assessment on Essential Assessment. We ask that you encourage your child(ren) to complete these tasks independently. Students will be tuning into multiplication with a picture book and playing a game.

Measurement and Geometry.

The focus this week in Length we are learning to understand that perimeter is the length around the boundary. Students will engage in practical activities of measuring the length of the sides of different objects and working on mental computation to calculate the perimeter. Their final lesson will be a post assessment on Essential Assessment to confirm  their learning and understanding.

Unit of Inquiry

This week the students will understand how they can take personal responsibility. Students will be the carer of an egg for a 24 hour period and consider strategies and behaviours to keep it safe, clean and uncracked. This will lead into an inquiry into how we can be responsible for our waste in order to protect the environment. Encouraging students to take positive action in a practical and hands on way will show them individuals can make a difference and promote change.

Wellbeing

The Wellbeing challenge for this week involves the students reflecting on their own character strengths.  The VIA Institute on Character identifies 24 character strengths including bravery, curiosity and honesty.  Having an awareness of your character strengths may help to boost self-confidence, support relationship building and increase resilience.
