Curriculum

Two weeks in already and it has absolutely flown by! Last week we had a ‘normal’ week before the busy, upcoming Week 3 with events like NAPLAN and Cross Country! During Kitchen Garden sessions, classes made and then demolished ANZAC Biscuits and we began our new Science topic: Chemical Science- Reactions and States of Matter. By the end of the week, all students should have their four goals on SeeSaw as they look to challenge themselves with their next steps for the beginning of the new term.

In Writing sessions last week, students worked in groups to identify different persuasive devices within a persuasive writing sample. They discussed the impact on the reader and thought of ways to write their own on the topic. Students brainstormed their own persuasive topics that they believe would create strong and creative arguments, for example, “Zoos can have useful purposes”. In Teacher Focused sessions, classes discussed WHY it is important to brainstorm ideas, especially around a focus. For example, in creating meeting agendas, writing job applications even applying for a grant or business proposal it’s important to think outside of the box! Ending the week, students looked at different marking criteria and assessed part of their own persuasive writing or

continued writing for their topic.

In Reading, students participated in whole class lessons preparing for our second Literature Circle rotations beginning next week. To prepare, students all worked on unpacking and discussing the same Indigenous text, The Shack My Dad Built. The text covers important messages such as family and friend connections, being grateful and proud for what you have and connection to land and nature. On Friday, students participated in a Literature Circle rotation discussing the text in more depth depending on their assigned role. This term the focus will be on the discussions had within the Literature Circle rather than reading off their slides. We are encouraging students to listen to the conversations, share their ideas and opinions as well as challenge any opinions they may agree or disagree with. Watch this space for a SeeSaw recording of these soon.

In Mathematics sessions last week, students looked over previous NAPLAN tests and worked in small groups to solve problems. Students and teachers ran mini focus groups covering common misconceptions amongst the class. It was great to see students supporting each other during this time. In the  following lessons, students played a popular game called ‘Fraction Wars’. In pairs and using a deck of cards, students drew two cards each to create a fraction. The biggest fraction wins! Students discussed improper fractions and mixed fractions as well as drawing their fractions to provide evidence as to why they won! QUIZ! Which is bigger- 7/2 or 2 and ¾?

For Leadership Hour last week, the Year 6’s had the students who attended the GRIP Leadership Conference last term present some of their takeaways to the other Year 6 students. They discussed the importance of Teamwork with a group and the 5 steps you can take to help hear all voices. 1) Share ideas from everybody 2) Select the most suitable ideas, 3) Select a timeframe, 4) Talk to team members, 5) Support each other. Afterwards, Leadership teams worked within their group on their action plans, meeting with staff or completing tasks around the school such as collecting compost bins or auditing our Indonesian school displays.

The Year 5 students continued to draft their reply letters from their extremely interesting and engaging scientist pen pals! They are due to send them back at the end of next week.

We hope all the Leadership Centre Mother's, Grandmother's and all other special ladies had a wonderful Sunday.

Have a great week!
