Diversity Week

From the 15th to the 20th of March MFG celebrated Cultural Diversity Week. This is a week in which we recognise diversity and run inclusion activities. Australia is a multicultural and vibrant country, with many people bringing their own religious and cultural traditions, as well as new traditions. In this week, we as a school celebrated by holding activities such as Henna and French boules during lunchtimes. On Friday the 18th of March we held a casual dress day in order to raise donations for our sponsor child.

During Tuesday we held a French boules competition. The game is played by having both feet standing together on the ground and throwing the silver ball to the smaller ball (which is placed a couple metres away) in aims to get the ball close to it. This game is often played in parks in France with the name ‘boules’ or ‘petange’.

A number of our students are talented henna artists and generously donated their time to run two sessions where they shared their talents. We ran these sessions because Australia is multicultural so it is good to know about different people's culture and traditions. Henna is mainly used in celebration of special occasions. Henna will almost always be a part of the celebrations, symbolising happiness and joy that makes people feel good.

Matthew Flinders has been a part of the World Vision Australia Organization for many years and the organisation focuses on working with families and children to overcome poverty and injustice. Our school had the opportunity to change a child's world and her name is Misozi Tembo. She is currently studying in secondary school and is 14 years old. The donations raised will benefit not only her but her community as well, by helping them to access clean water, education and nutrition. This is contributing to sustainable change and helping in identifying children's vulnerability and poverty in order to create development projects that can address that. All of the donations that we raise will allow us to help Misozi Tembo and her community's life and future.
