Aboriginal Education
National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
This year, the theme is ‘Be Brave. Make Change’ and we celebrated between 27 May and 3 June. Windang Public School students completed a range of activities to learn about this special week. Each class made posters and artworks, inspired by this year’s Reconciliation Week poster and the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.
Windang Public School thanks the The Australian Taxation Office Wollongong Indigenous Network (Moondani) for their kind donation of books for Reconciliation Week 2022. Our proud Stage 3 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are shown below holding the donated books. These books will provide wonderful opportunities for our students to learn about Aboriginal and Indigenous culture and heritage to help to bridge the gaps in knowledge, understanding and acceptance.
NAIDOC Week
The 2022 theme for NAIDOC Week is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! which advocates for systemic change and for every person to keep rallying around our mob, our Elders, our communities. It’s also time to celebrate the many who have driven and led change in our communities over generations—they have been the heroes and champions of change, of equal rights and even basic human rights.
Windang Public School will be celebrating NAIDOC Week on Wednesday 20 July 2022 which is Week 1 of Term 3. We will host a whole school assembly where we are delighted to have Gumaraa Aboriginal Experience lead a smoking ceremony, play the didgeridoo and share a welcome to country. Students will also participate in class rotations to more deeply explore Aboriginal culture and the theme of 'Get Up! Stand Up! and Show Up!'
