MATHEMATICS

Last week, we were once again visited by our Mathematics consultant, Kathy Palmer. Kathy has been working with us throughout 2021 and we continue to value her support and guidance in further refining our teaching and planning practices to facilitate positive student outcomes. Her work with us so far has included developing a whole-school plan for teaching and learning in Mathematics and modelling a wide range of lessons in a variety of year levels.

Kathy’s recent visit was focussed on modelling the Mackellar Primary School Mathematics pedagogical model in the Grade 3 and Foundation year levels. The lessons focussed on further developing students’ understanding of place value and counting concepts using concrete materials. Our students were highly engaged throughout the lessons and the buzz within classrooms was electric. Teachers then debriefed with Kathy to identify the high-impact teaching strategies she employed during her modelled lessons and planned for how they can further embed their new learnings within their own practice.

We look forward to continuing our work with Kathy throughout the year.
