ECPN Easter Party/ Velikonoční setkání ECPN

After cancellations because of Covid, we were finally able to hold the 5th annual ECPN event on 8 April, at the Hard Rock Café. After so much time apart, everyone was very excited at the thought of getting together again and it was a great evening, bringing together graduates from ECP’s first IB graduation year in 1997, right through to last year’s 2021 graduates.

It was particularly good to see the classes of 2020 and 2021 there - because of Covid, they had missed many of the experiences the other graduates had enjoyed during their last couple of years at the College.

It was also an opportunity for graduates to say ‘thank you’ to Vladimir and Dana Gavriněv, who will be retiring in the summer. Vladimír was the first member of staff to be recruited although it was not originally as a teacher, but as an interpreter. In fact, he was taken along by the family of one of the first families to apply, even before the College opened. He and Dana then went on to teach every ECP graduate since the College opened in September 1994.

Dr Brown, in his words of welcome, showed everyone the architects’ plans for the new extension, now that we have finally bought the building from Prague 9. He said that although these are exciting times for the College, as we look towards the future, he assured graduates that the English College would always remain the friendly, welcoming environment they all remember from their own school days.

Po lednovém zrušení kvůli Covidu jsme konečně mohli 8. dubna uspořádat 5. ročník akce pro absolventy v Hard Rock Café. Po tak dlouhé pauze byli všichni nadšeni myšlenkou se znovu sejít. Byl to skvělý večer, kde se sešli absolventi od prvního roku fungování ECP, kteří maturovali v roce 1997, až po absolventy loňského roku 2021.

Velmi rádi jsme viděli maturanty roku 2020 a 2021, kteří kvůli Covidu přišli o mnoho zážitků, jež si ostatní absolventi mohli ke konci studia v ECP užít.

Pro absolventy to byla také příležitost poděkovat Vladimírovi a Daně Gavriněvovým, kteří v létě odcházejí do důchodu. Vladimír byl prvním zaměstnancem ECP, ačkoli původně nebyl učitel, ale tlumočník. Přivedla ho jedna z prvních rodin, které přihlásily děti ke studia v novém Anglickém gymnáziu, ještě před jeho otevřením. Vladimír i Dana pak začali vyučovat tělesnou výchovu v září 1994 a od té doby učili všechny absolventy ECP.

Pan ředitel, Dr. Brown, při svém proslovu na uvítanou prezentoval plány architektů na novou přístavbu školy, která se brzy zrealizuje díky dokončené koupi budovy od Prahy 9. Dr. Brown řekl, že ačkoli jsou to pro ECP vzrušující plány do budoucna nic to nemění na tom, že Anglické gymnázium zůstane vždy přátelským a vstřícným místem, které si absolventi pamatují ze svých školních let.

Filip Kielar (1999)

1999 ECP graduate, Filip Kielar, went on to study Chemistry, first at the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague where he did his Master’s in Organic Chemistry, before moving to the University of Durham, when he completed his PhD in 2008, focusing on the development of luminescent lanthanide complexes for cellular imaging. He is now a lecturer in the Chemistry Department of Naresuan University in Thailand.

As both a teacher and researcher, he has secured funding for his research from Naresuan University and from the Thailand Research Fund for young investigators. His research is inspired by his post-doctoral work on the biological roles of iron.

Now he has started his own channel on YouTube - Science News. His motivation was to find a new way to reach his students and to share his passion for science. He is also using it in his Communicative English for Scientific Presentations classes where students prepare to give presentations on scientific papers.

Absolvent ECP z roku 1999 Filip Kielar studoval chemii, nejprve na Vysoké škole chemicko-technologické v Praze, kde získal magisterský titul v oboru organická chemie, a poté pokračoval na University of Durham, kde v roce 2008 dokončil doktorát se zaměřením na vývoj luminiscenčních komplexů lanthanoidů pro zobrazování buněk. Nyní přednáší na katedře chemie na Naresuan University v Thajsku.

Jako učitel a vědec si zajistil financování svého výzkumu od Naresuan University a od Thajského výzkumného fondu pro mladé vědce. Jeho výzkum je inspirován jeho postdoktorskou prací o biologických aspektech železa.

Filip nyní založil svůj vlastní kanál na YouTube – Science News. Jeho motivací bylo najít nový způsob, jak oslovit své studenty a sdílet svou vášeň pro vědu. Kanál využívá také ve svých hodinách komunikativní angličtiny pro vědecké prezentace, kde se studenti připravují na prezentace vědeckých prací.

Samanta Budinová (2009)

After I graduated from ECP in 2009, I decided to go towards a career within the creative sector and attended the three-year Graphic Design BA degree course at Prague College. Thanks to my postgraduate studies, finishing with a Design Management and Marketing for the Fashion Industries MA degree at the University of the Arts, London College of Fashion, I further developed both my creative and strategic skills with a specific focus on the international fashion market. I gained an in-depth understanding of marketing and retail strategies. Likewise, interning at the strategically-focused and creatively-led design agency D.Vision Create in London, then working as a junior art director at Leo Burnett Prague and finally, as a senior art director at DDB Prague, enabled me to develop insights into the world of the creative industries and to keep up to date with current trends in advertising.

My academic background and work experience have provided me with a set of unique, industry- and job-specific skills that have enabled me to co-found my own company called Lunamies®. We're a Czech design brand, based on the unique concept of combining light and textile decorations. Our customers, both big and small, help us create unique decoration designs for children's rooms, for  birthday parties or as playful backgrounds for family photographs.

Po ukončení studia na Anglickém gymnáziu v roce 2009 jsem se rozhodla pro kariéru v kreativním sektoru a navštěvovala jsem tříletý bakalářský obor grafický design na Prague College. Díky svému postgraduálnímu studiu, zakončenému magisterským titulem v oboru Design Management and Marketing for Fashion Industries na University of the Arts, London College of Fashion, jsem dále rozvíjela své kreativní a strategické dovednosti se specifickým zaměřením na mezinárodní módní trh. Získala jsem hluboké znalosti o marketingových a maloobchodních strategiích. Následná stáž ve strategicky zaměřené a kreativně vedené designové agentuře D.Vision Create v Londýně, pozice junior art directora v Leo Burnett Prague a poté také senior art directora v DDB Prague mi umožnila rozvinout vhled do světa kreativního průmyslu a držet krok se současnými trendy v reklamě.

Moje akademické znalosti a pracovní zkušenosti mi poskytly řadu jedinečných dovedností specifických pro dané odvětví, které mi umožnily spoluzaložit vlastní společnost s názvem Lunamies®. Jsme česká designová značka založená na unikátním konceptu spojení světelných a textilních dekorací. Naši velcí i malí zákazníci nám pomáhají vytvářet jedinečné návrhy dekorací do dětských pokojů, na narozeninové oslavy nebo jako hravé pozadí pro rodinné fotografie.

Dominika Hašek (2014)

Back in December, we asked you to vote for Dominika and her band, DOMI, who were in the running to represent the Czech Republic in the Eurovision Song Contest. We were all delighted when they won and DOMI are now only weeks away from performing Lights Off in Milan! They are currently touring ahead of Eurovision, but we are all looking forward to cheering them on in May.

V prosinci jsme vás požádali, abyste hlasovali pro Dominiku a její kapelu DOMI, když se rozhodovalo, zda bude reprezentovat Českou republiku v soutěži Eurovision Song Contest. Všichni jsme byli potěšeni, když vyhráli a DOMI jsou nyní jen pár týdnů od svého vystoupení s písní Lights Off v Miláně! Momentálně jsou ještě před Eurovizí na turné, ale všichni se těšíme, až jim v květnu budeme fandit.

Františka Vosátková (2020)

Františka left the ECP in 2020 to study English and Scottish Literature at the University of Edinburgh. She is now making a name for herself as a director and coincidentally, her show echoes the College’s Theme of the Year, which is also Roots.

Františka says: “Roots is an experimental dance piece that takes you through each aspect of an individual's identity. Using movement alone, the cast guide you through one character's relationships, struggles and journey towards healing. Showcasing a variety of dance styles, using shadow work and encompassing personal experience, we have created a piece of theatre that may make you consider your own roots.”

Františka odmaturovala v ECP v roce 2020 a poté šla studovat anglickou a skotskou literaturu na University of Edinburgh. Nyní se prosazuje jako režisérka a shodou okolností její show odráží současné téma roku v ECP, kterým je také kořeny.

Františka říká: „Roots/Kořeny je experimentální taneční číslo, který vás provede každým aspektem identity jedince. Pomocí samotného pohybu vás herci provedou vztahy a zápasy jedné postavy i cestou k jejímu uzdravení. Kombinací různých tanečních stylů, s využitím práce se stínem a zahrnutím osobních zkušeností jsme vytvořili divadelní představení, které vás může přimět zamyslet se nad svými vlastními kořeny.“

Nigel Haward

Older graduates will remember Nigel as Director of Studies and Biology teacher from 1994-2002. He and his wife, Jane, were back in school last year when Jane officially opened the refurbished library, as ECP’s first Librarian.

But even those who worked with him in those days may not realise that Nigel is also a talented artist and he will be exhibiting his work at an exhibition in St Peter’s Church in Newlyn from Easter Sunday (17 April) to 23 April. So if you are visiting Cornwall over Easter, pop in to see him and his paintings.

Starší absolventi si Nigela pamatují jako zástupce ředitele pro akademické záležitosti a učitele biologie v letech 1994-2002. On i jeho manželka Jane loni ECP navštívili, když Jane oficiálně otevřela zrekonstruovanou knihovnu jakožto první knihovnice školy.

Ale ani ti, kteří s Nigelem v ECP spolupracovali, si možná neuvědomují, že je také talentovaným umělcem a své práce bude vystavovat na výstavě v kostele svatého Petra v Newlynu od Velikonoční neděle (17. dubna) do 23. dubna. Pokud tedy o Velikonocích navštívíte Cornwall, přijďte se podívat na Nigela i jeho obrazy.

ECP Graduates’ Humanitarian Work for Ukraine/Absolventi ECP zapojení do humanitární pomoci Ukrajině

ECP students have been working hard in school to raise money to support Člověk v tísni, who have been delivering aid to the most affected regions of Ukraine and it will not surprise readers to know that graduates have also been involved in the humanitarian efforts. Here are just some of those we have heard about, but we are sure there are many others.

Naši současní studenti ve škole usilovně pracovali, aby získali peníze na podporu organizaci Člověk v tísni, která distribuuje pomoc nejpostiženějším oblastem Ukrajiny, a čtenáře nepřekvapí, že se do humanitárního úsilí zapojili i absolventi. Zde jsou jen některé z příkladů, o kterých jsme slyšeli, ale jsme si jisti, že existuje mnoho dalších.

Josel Vágner (2010)

One of the first was 2010 graduate, Josef Vágner, who put his musical talents to good use by staging a benefit concert.

Jedním z prvních byl absolvent z roku 2010 Josef Vágner, který své hudební nadání zúročil pořádáním benefičního koncertu.

Tobiáš Mrkvička, Prokop Prach and Adam Bórik (2018)

Tobiáš, Prokop and Adam have been collecting supplies and driving with them to the Zakarpattia region of western Ukraine. 

Tobiáš, Prokop a Adam zorganizovali sbírku zásob a vše dovezli do Zakarpatské oblasti na západní Ukrajině.

Yegor Lanovenko (2010)

Another ECP graduate working to help Ukrainian refugees in the UK and in the Czech Republic is Yegor Lanovenko (2010). Yegor is originally from Odessa and has set up Opora, an organisation to provide assistance to his fellow Ukrainians.

He says: I am now  extraordinarily fortunate to live in London, far away from the devastating war raging on the very streets where my friends and I grew up play fighting with stick guns. The nightmare reality for children and families all across Ukraine today is bloodshed and fighting that is all too real.

Yegor has been interviewed about Opora on BBC Radio 4’s flagship news programme Today, and on UK television, on GB News.

Dalším absolventem ECP, který pomáhá ukrajinským uprchlíkům ve Spojeném království a v České republice, je Yegor Lanovenko (2010). Yegor je původem z Oděsy a založil organizaci Opora, která má poskytovat pomoc jeho krajanům.

Říká: Mám nyní mimořádné štěstí, že žiji v Londýně, daleko od ničivé války zuřící právě v ulicích, kde jsme s přáteli vyrostli při klukovských hrách s imitacemi zbraní. V současné době je však na Ukrajině pro děti a rodiny realitou noční můra krveprolití a bojů, které jsou až příliš reálné.
