The 6th Václav Havel Scholarship Concert/Šestý koncert na podporu Stipendia Václava Havla

On Friday, April 1, the sixth annual concert in support of the Václav Havel Scholarship, which is intended for boys and girls from Romani families, took place in the Baroque refectory of the Dominican monastery in Prague. We believe that education can help the Roma community overcome the problems they face.

In recent years, students of the English College in Prague, who are organising the entire concert, have managed to raise a total of 2 million crowns. This school year, the second Roma Scholar, Adam Laburda, was able to enter our Year 1.

The students from the organising team announced two competitions - with a literary and artistic focus. Well-known Romani English author Richard O'Neill collaborated with them on the literary competition.

This year, students are starting a new fundraising cycle - over the next six years, they will have to gather an amount that will allow another holder of the Václav Havel Scholarship to enter the school when Adam finishes his studies at ECP.

"My huge thanks also go to everyone involved in the Václav Havel Scholarship initiative, both new and previous helpers, and I hope that even after my departure, this initiative will continue and give another Roma student the huge opportunity that this scholarship brought to me,” said Marek Horváth, the first holder of the Václav Havel Scholarship.

Several well-known personalities donated interesting items or books to the fundraising auction, which will take place during the concert.

The concert, as well as both competitions, received the Patronage of the Ministry of Education of the Czech Republic this year.

V pátek 1. 4. proběhl v Barokním refektáři dominikánského kláštera v Praze již šestý ročník koncertu na podporu Stipendia Václava Havla, které je určené pro chlapce a dívky z romských rodin. Věříme, že vzdělání může pomoci romské komunitě překonávat problémy, jimž čelí. 

V uplynulých ročnících se studentům Anglického gymnázia - the English College in Prague, kteří celý koncert pořádají, podařilo získat celkovou částku 2 milionů korun. V letošním školním roce tedy mohl do 1. ročníku nastoupit již druhý romský stipendista, Adam Laburda. 

Studenti vyhlásili dvě soutěže - literárně výtvarnou a výtvarnou. Na literární soutěži s nimi spolupracoval známý romský anglický autor Richard O‘Neill. 

Studenti letos začínají nový fundraisingový cyklus - musí během dalších šesti let opět dát dohromady částku, která umožní dalšímu držiteli Stipendia Václava Havla do školy nastoupit, až Adam své studium v Anglickém gymnáziu ukončí. 

“Moje obrovské díky patří i všem zapojeným do iniciativy Stipendium Václava Havla, jak novým, tak předešlým, a doufám, že i po mém odchodu bude tato iniciativa pokračovat a umožní dalšímu romskému studentovi tu obrovskou životní šanci, kterou toto stipendium bylo i pro mne.” uvedl Marek Horváth, první nositel Stipendia Václava Havla.

Řada významných osobností věnovala zajímavé předměty nebo knihy do aukce, která se uskuteční během koncertu. 

Jak koncert, tak i obě soutěže získaly v letošním roce Záštitu Ministerstva školství ČR.

The Czech Republic can be proud of its unprecedented support for Ukraine - from NGOs, through the government to ordinary citizens. Perhaps one of the reasons is the historical context of this conflict and its significance for us Czechs, many of whom have even changed their view of refugees by 180 degrees. Nevertheless, the West still does not seem to have changed its views on minorities. Reports that Czech bus drivers refuse to pick up Romani Ukrainian mothers or that two Romani refugees - Ukrainian mothers with four children - have been asked to leave accommodation in the Czech Republic are just some of the headlines that are not discussed in the society. It is sad to see that even in such extreme situations, people cannot get rid of prejudice against minorities.

Education, appreciation of Romani culture and enlightenment seem to be the only way to ensure that these prejudices are not passed on to our generation. As part of this important change, the benefit concert in support of the Václav Havel Scholarship was held on 1st April. The concert was a way to appreciate and celebrate Romani culture and the importance of diversity in society through music. Eileen Griffin and Tadeáš Vácha were the moderators of the evening. Apart from performances by ECP students supported by Head of Music, Mrs Hatinová, the audience could also listen to the songs of special Romani guests, including Mrs. Erika Nováková, Lenka Fečová, Izabela Chalupníková and Martin Balog.

Česká republika má důvod být hrdá na nevídanou podporu Ukrajině – od nevládních organizací, přes vládu až po běžné občany. Možná také kvůli historickému kontextu tohoto konfliktu a jeho významu pro nás Čechy dokonce mnozí změnili svůj pohled na uprchlíky o 180 stupňů. Přesto se zdá, že Západ své názory na menšiny stále ještě nezměnil. Zprávy o tom, že čeští řidiči autobusů odmítají vyzvednout romské ukrajinské matky nebo že dvě romské uprchlice - ukrajinské matky se čtyřmi dětmi byly vyzvány k opuštění ubytovacích zařízení v České republice, jsou jen některé z titulků, o které se ve společnosti nemluví. Je smutné vidět, že ani v tak extrémních situacích se nemůže lidstvo zbavit předsudků vůči menšinám.

Vzdělávání, ocenění romské kultury a osvěta se zdá být jediným způsobem, jak zajistit, aby se tyto předsudky nepřenesly na naši generaci. Na podporu této důležité změny se v Dominikánském klášteře konal benefiční koncert pro Stipendium Václava Havla. 

Koncert přinesl způsob, jak ocenit a oslavit romskou kulturu a důležitost rozmanitosti ve společnosti prostřednictvím hudby. Večerem provázeli studenti Eileen Griffin a Tadeáš Vácha. Kromě vystoupení studentů ECP pod vedením paní učitelky Hatinové na koncertě zazněly také hudební výkony romských hostů - paní Eriky Novákové, Lenky Fečové, Izabely Chalupníkové a Martina Baloga.

The 6th Václav Havel Scholarship concert was a wonderful evening full of music, with appearances from not only our ECP students but also Roma musicians Izabela Chalupníková, Erika Nováková, Lenka Fečová, Martin Fečo and Martin Balogh, who enriched the event with their culture and stunning performances. Apart from all the different musical performances, throughout the evening, a trailer from last year’s concert that had taken place online was played, winners of the art competition “3 about me’s” were announced and during a break between the first and second half, a silent auction with many interesting signed books was held. Everyone from the audience had a small card stuck under their seat where they could give their contact information to donate to the scholarship directly. Later, a live auction was held at the beginning of the second half of the concert, featuring a painting by Václav Jíra (which came with a video by Kryštof Folbrecht to provide some context) and two signed silk scarves from fashion designer Jitka Klett. The event finished off with a speech from Dr. Brown and an amazing ECP rockband performance of a song by the Rolling Stones that got everyone up from their seats, clapping to the rhythm. All in all, I think that the event was enjoyed by everyone and was overall a great success.

6. ročník koncertu na podporu Stipendia Václava Havla přinesl nádherný večer plný hudby, na kterém vystoupili nejen naši studenti Anglického gymnázia, ale také romští hudebníci Izabela Chalupníková, Erika Nováková, Lenka Fečová, Martin Fečo a Martin Balog, kteří akci obohatili svou kulturou a ohromujícími výkony. Kromě různých hudebních vystoupení byla v průběhu večera prezentována také nahrávka z loňského koncertu, který se konal online, byli vyhlášeni vítězové výtvarné soutěže „Třikrát co“ a během přestávky mezi první a druhou částí proběhla tichá aukce předmětů, včetně mnoha zajímavých knih s autogramy. Diváci měli pod sedadly přilepenou malou kartičku, na kterou mohli uvést své kontaktní údaje a jejich prostřednictvím pak zaslat příspěvek na stipendium. Na začátku druhé poloviny koncertu se uskutečnila živá aukce obrazu Václava Jíry (který byl doplněn videem Kryštofa Folbrechta, které poskytlo kontext) a dvou podepsaných hedvábných šátků od módní návrhářky Jitky Klett. Akce byla zakončena projevem ředitele, Dr. Browna, a úžasným vystoupením rockové skupiny ECP s písní od Rolling Stones, která všechny zvedla ze sedadel a diváci tleskali do rytmu. Celkově si myslím, že se akce všem líbila a vydařila se.

This year's concert, all-around, was a huge success. We raised even more than 71 000 czk, which is a large sum, and we thank everyone who contributed. The preparations for it were sometimes long but were all worthwhile. The atmosphere that was created at the concert was magical. All of our students that performed were very talented, and the performances by our special guests: Martin Balogh, Erika Nováková, Lenka Fečova, Izabela Chalupníková, Martin Fečo, were beautiful.  

Months of preparations have gone into this event: organising the auctions, contacting Roma musicians willing to perform, writing the program itself and much more. The Václav Havel Team has done an extreme amount of work, and I would like to thank each member for doing so. It consumed time, but I believe that every second that the team put into making this concert happen was well used as the evening was incredible. 

The opening speech that Adam, our current Václav Havel scholar, presented, was very moving and reminded everyone why they were there and how important everything we do, especially the scholarship, is. He was followed by many of our students as well as the Romani musicians who showed us more about their culture with their amazing voices and their piano skills. 

But overall, I would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way, and I would especially like to thank the Václav Havel Team for all their hard work in making this event possible. The evening was exceptional and I am dearly looking forward to next year's one.

Letošní koncert měl obrovský úspěch po všech stránkách. Vybrali jsme dokonce více než 71 000 Kč, což je velká částka a děkujeme všem, kteří přispěli. Přípravy byly časově náročné, ale určitě to stálo za to. Atmosféra, která na koncertě vznikla, byla kouzelná. Všichni naši studenti, kteří vystoupili, byli velmi šikovní a krásné byla i výkony našich vzácných hostů: Martina Baloga, Eriky Novákové, Lenky Fečové, Izabely Chalupníkové, Martina Fečo.

Přípravy na akci trvaly měsíce: organizace aukcí, kontaktování romských hudebníků ochotných vystoupit, sepsání samotného programu a mnoho dalšího. Tým Stipendia Václava Havla odvedl obrovský kus práce a já bych za to ráda poděkovala každému členovi. Věřím, že každá vteřina, kterou tým vložil do uskutečnění tohoto koncertu, byla dobře využita, protože večer byl neuvěřitelný.

Úvodní řeč, kterou přednesl Adam, náš současný držitel Stipendia Václava Havla, byla velmi dojemná a všem připomněla, proč tam byli a jak důležité je vše, co děláme, zvláště samotné stipendium. Následovala vystoupení mnoha studentů ECP a také romských hudebníků, kteří nám svými úžasnými hlasy a klavírními dovednostmi ukázali více o své kultuře.

Závěrem bych ráda poděkovala všem, kteří jakkoli přispěli, a zvláště bych chtěla poděkovat týmu Stipendia Václava Havla za všechnu tvrdou práci, která tuto akci umožnila. Koncert byl výjimečný a už se moc těším na ten příští.

For me, the Roma Awareness week was a big success. 

I believe that it is very important for people to learn more about our culture so they can understand us more. People often don’t talk about us nicely and they judge us even though they don’t know us. 

I’m glad that I can participate in these events and their positive message about us, about Roma people. 

Z mého pohledu byl Týdne romské kultury a rozmanitosti velkým úspěchem.

Věřím, že je velmi důležité, aby se lidé dozvěděli více o naší kultuře, aby nám více porozuměli. Lidé o nás často nemluví hezky a soudí nás, i když nás neznají.

Jsem rád, že se mohu zúčastnit těchto akcí a jejich pozitivního poselství o nás, o Romech.

Good evening. I’m Adam, I'm a student, I’m a Roma boy from Czech Republic. Studying at the ECP is very important to me and I will tell you why. A lot of people think that Roma people are mostly good musicians or dancers but I’m none of those. You definitely don’t want to hear me singing. That’s why I brought my friends who really sing very well.

More important to me is education, achieving something and being very good at something. We have loads and loads of Roma people who are highly educated and very respected and they are my role models. Though, their journey was not easy. My parents always tell me that there should be more Roma people like them so things could change and I absolutely agree. That’s why I’m so glad that the start to my journey can be much easier thanks to the Václav Havel Scholarship. 

Dobrý večer. Jmenuji se Adam a jsem student, jsem romský chlapec z České republiky. Studium na Anglickém gymnáziu je pro mě velmi důležité a řeknu vám proč. Spousta lidí si myslí, že Romové jsou většinou dobří hudebníci nebo tanečníci, ale já nejsem ani jedno. Určitě byste mě nechtěli slyšet zpívat. Proto jsem přivedl své přátele, kteří opravdu umí velmi dobře zpívat.

Pro mě je důležitější vzdělání, něčeho dosáhnout a být v něčem velmi dobrý. Máme spoustu Romů, kteří jsou vysoce vzdělaní a velmi vážení a jsou mými vzory. Jejich cesta však nebyla jednoduchá. Moji rodiče mi vždy říkají, že by mělo být více takových Romů, aby se věci mohly změnit, a já naprosto souhlasím. Jsem proto moc rád, že začátek mé cesty může být díky Stipendiu Václava Havla mnohem snazší.

My name is Marek Horváth and I was the first student on Václav Havel Scholarship. This scholarship allowed me to attend The English College in Prague. It was a great opportunity to study at this school, an opportunity that not many people have. Because of this I think it important that someone else gets the same opportunity that I did, that might seem unattainable now. Studying at this school gave me a lot of experiences and new feelings, in addition it allowed me to get in touch with different cultures, something that others should also experience. The level of English that one can learn at this school is something that is very beneficial these days. I think that the presence of another Roma student at this school will be beneficial not only to the student, but also his classmates, as they will see the Roma in a different light than that in which they are being shown today.

Jmenuji se Marek Horváth, a jsem prvním držitelem Stipendia Václava Havla. Toto stipendium mi umožnilo navštěvovat The English College in Prague, soukromé anglické gymnázium v Praze. Studium na této škole pro mne bylo velkou příležitostí, kterou mnoho lidí nemá. Proto si myslím, že by tuto možnost měl dostat další student, pro kterého by se jinak mohla zdát nedosažitelnou. Studium na této škole mi dalo spoustu nových zkušeností a pocitů, a umožnilo mi se seznámit i s jinými kulturami, a to samé by měl zažít i někdo další. Znalost angličtiny, kterou může další student díky tomuto stipendiu získat, je v dnešní době obrovským přínosem. Myslím, že přítomnost dalšího romského žáka na této škole nebude přínosem pouze pro něj, ale i pro jeho spolužáky, kterým se romský národ otevře v jiném světle, než v jakém je dnes prezentován.
