Year 8 Values Day
To round off a busy term one, our Year 8 students were provided with an opportunity to be involved in a day of extra-curricular activities based around our College values.
Firstly, we welcomed our guest speaker Scott Harris. Scott lives with the side effects of a traumatic brain injury that has resulted in him needing to re-learn how to walk and talk and it has meant that he has had to re-shape his life. Scott's key messages resonate with our college value of Persistence. Importantly, he spoke of the importance of setting goals (goals for today, for this week or month, life goals) as a motivation to keep going even when he is feeling at his lowest. Discussions around goals can be a great measure to help keep our young people motivated and you might like to do some work around this at home.
Secondly, our students demonstrated their commitment to our College value of Community during our round-robin novelty events. With many students getting into the spirit of the day and dressing in our house colours, it was 'game on' in the highly competitive house competition. Congratulations to all of our students for their positive engagement in this event and to all of the students of Aston - your Excellence in every event led to you being the ultimate winners. Well done.
For our final session for the day we enjoyed watching the documentary film 'Freeman'. If you have not seen this film I highly recommend that you watch it together as a family. Cathy's story is inspiring and extends well beyond her Olympic achievements. Our students were so impressed by this story that they burst into a round of applause at the end (I think they were applauding Cathy's success!). The film is available through ABC i-View for those of you who are keen to see it.
We were incredibly impressed with our Year 8 students throughout the day - so impressed that we are already planning for our next big event.
